Sample itineraries for Alleppey
Alleppey rewards a slow pace, so these itineraries deliberately leave room to do less. In all of them, the backwaters are the centrepiece; build the rest around your cruise.
One day (backwaters in a hurry). Doable but tight โ the shape of a day trip from Kochi or a single night in town.
- Start early with either a half-day houseboat cruise or, for a more intimate experience, a sunrise village canoe tour through the inner canals of Kuttanad.
- Back in town by early afternoon, have a Kerala lunch โ a sadya on a banana leaf if you can find one, or a fish meen curry meal.
- Spend the late afternoon at Alleppey Beach and the old pier, finishing with sunset over the Arabian Sea before your onward journey.
Two days (the comfortable version). The recommended length, and enough to do Alleppey justice.
- Day 1: Board an overnight houseboat around midday. Spend the afternoon cruising Vembanad Lake and the Kuttanad canals, watch the sunset from the deck, and have dinner cooked on board as the boat anchors for the night in a quiet backwater.
- Day 2: Disembark mid-morning after breakfast on the water. Use the rest of the day at a relaxed pace โ a slow morning at Marari Beach, a stop at the Ambalappuzha temple, or a wander through the town's canals and coir workshops โ before moving on.
Two days, culture-and-birds variation. Swap the second day for a birdwatching boat trip to Pathiramanal island at first light, then drive south to Krishnapuram Palace for its great Gajendra Moksham mural, returning via the Ambalappuzha temple.
Backwater route to Kollam (add a day). One of Kerala's classic slow-travel legs: take the long AlleppeyโKollam cruise (about eight hours) across the open backwaters instead of driving south. It turns the journey itself into the day's activity, threading past Kuttanad, canals and lakeside villages, and drops you in Kollam ready to continue toward the southern beaches. Confirm the current sailing schedule, which is seasonal and can change.
Alleppey within a Kerala loop. Most travellers fold Alleppey into a wider Kerala circuit. A popular week-long shape runs Kochi (Fort Kochi and Mattancherry) โ Alleppey (backwaters) โ Kumarakom or Kottayam โ the hills of Munnar and the wildlife of Thekkady (Periyar) โ south to the beaches, using Alleppey as the essential backwater stop. Five days is the practical minimum for a version of this; a week or more lets you slow down.
