Chandigarh

Chandigarh is unlike any other Indian city, and that is precisely the point. Where most Indian cities grew over centuries in organic, unplanned layers, Chandigarh was designed from scratch on open farmland in the 1950s — a deliberate act of modern nation-building. After Partition split the old Punjab and left the province without its historic capital of Lahore, India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru wanted a new capital that would look forward rather than back, "unfettered by the traditions of the past." The result is India's first planned city, laid out on a numbered grid of self-contained sectors, threaded with parkland, and given its civic heart by the Swiss-French modernist architect Le Corbusier.

That heritage makes Chandigarh a genuinely distinctive stop. It is the shared capital of two states, Punjab and Haryana, while being administered directly by the central government as a Union Territory in its own right — a small, green, unusually orderly enclave at the foot of the Shivalik Hills in northern India. Broad tree-lined avenues, roundabouts instead of chaotic junctions, generous green belts and a low skyline give the city a spacious, breathable feel that regularly lands it near the top of Indian quality-of-life and cleanliness rankings. For travellers coming off the intensity of Delhi or the old Mughal cities, arriving here can feel like exhaling.

The city's headline attraction is its architecture and its gardens. The Capitol Complex — Le Corbusier's monumental group of government buildings crowned by the rotating Open Hand Monument — was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016 as part of a transnational listing of the architect's work. A short drive away sits the city's most beloved and most surprising sight, the Rock Garden of Nek Chand, a sprawling fantasy landscape of sculptures and courtyards built secretly over decades entirely from industrial and household waste. Add the tranquil Sukhna Lake, the vast Zakir Hussain Rose Garden, and a Le Corbusier–designed museum, and you have a compact, walkable set of things to do that rewards a relaxed pace.

Chandigarh is also, unmistakably, a Punjabi city at the table. This is a place to eat generously — buttery North Indian curries, towering plates of chole bhature, tandoori grills, thick lassi and cold kulfi — in a food culture that treats hospitality as a competitive sport. The central shopping plaza of Sector 17 and the food lanes of Sector 26 give the modern city its social buzz, alongside gleaming malls and cafés that reflect a young, prosperous, education-and-IT-driven population.

Practically, Chandigarh suits a short, easy visit. One full day covers the essentials — Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, the Rose Garden and a wander through Sector 17 — and two days let you add the Capitol Complex tour, the museum and a slower pace. Just as importantly, the city is the natural launchpad for the hills: it is the road-and-rail gateway to Shimla and the rest of Himachal Pradesh, and a clutch of hill stations, Mughal gardens and Sikh pilgrimage towns lie within easy day-trip range. Come for the planning and the gardens, stay for the food, and use it as your doorway to the mountains.
