Best time to visit Chennai

The short answer is November to February, the coolest and most comfortable stretch of a year that is otherwise hot and humid for months on end. Chennai has a tropical climate strongly shaped by its position on the Bay of Bengal, and — unusually for India — its main rains come not with the southwest monsoon of high summer but with the retreating northeast monsoon in late autumn. The figures below follow the pattern documented by the India Meteorological Department (IMD); treat them as typical conditions, not a forecast for your specific dates.

Summer (March–June) is long, and it is the season to avoid if you can. Heat and humidity build relentlessly from March, and by May — the peak — daytime highs commonly sit in the high 30s Celsius and can approach 40°C, made far more oppressive by coastal humidity that keeps the air heavy and the nights warm. Locals know the worst of it as Agni Nakshatram ("the fire star") in May. Sightseeing at midday in this season is genuinely draining; if you must travel then, go early, stay hydrated, and plan indoor stops for the afternoon.

Southwest monsoon (June–September) brings some relief and scattered rain, but Chennai sits in a relative rain-shadow for this monsoon and gets less from it than most of India — so these months remain hot and sticky rather than truly wet. It is a workable but uncomfortable shoulder period.

Northeast monsoon (October–December) is Chennai's chief rainy season and its defining weather event. Per the IMD, the northeast (or retreating) monsoon normally sets in around 20 October, give or take a week, and the October–December window delivers close to half of the city's annual rainfall, with the heaviest, most concentrated spells typically in November. Rain here often falls in intense late-night and early-morning bursts, and severe spells can cause urban flooding and transport disruption. The upside is a dramatic drop in temperature — many residents consider October and November the freshest, most pleasant weeks of the year despite the downpours — and lush, rain-washed surroundings. Build a little slack into tight schedules if you travel in November, and keep an eye on local forecasts.

Winter (roughly December–February) is the ideal window. December sees the tail of the monsoon ease off and the weather turn reliably comfortable; January and February are the mildest months of the year, with warm, sunny days generally in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius and pleasantly cool evenings. Humidity is lower, the light is kind, and this is when the city is at its most walkable — which is exactly why it is also the peak cultural and tourist season.

The strongest reason to aim for December–January specifically is the Madras Music Season (Margazhi), the city's world-famous festival of Carnatic music and classical dance, which runs from around mid-December into mid-January. If your dates line up, you get the best weather of the year and the cultural high point of the calendar at once. The other great winter fixture is Pongal, the four-day Tamil harvest festival in mid-January (see the culture section). When not to go: the peak of summer in May–June for the heat and humidity, and — if you have zero schedule flexibility — the wettest fortnight of November, purely for the flooding and transport risk.
