Sample itineraries for Coorg
Coorg is a short, scenic break, and its sights fall into natural clusters — Madikeri town, the Kushalnagar/Kaveri belt to the east, and the Talacauvery/Bhagamandala corner to the west. The itineraries below are built around those clusters to cut down on backtracking on the winding hill roads. In all cases, start early — mornings are clearer, viewpoints are less crowded, and river-crossing activities like Dubare run in the morning.
One day (a taste of Coorg). Tight, but workable if you have only a day, ideally with a hired car.
- Begin at Raja's Seat early, or drive up for a Mandalpatti sunrise by jeep if the weather is clear.
- Mid-morning, see Abbey Falls and walk through the plantation approach.
- Take in Madikeri Fort and the Omkareshwara Temple in the town centre.
- In the afternoon, do a short coffee plantation walk, and finish back at Raja's Seat for the sunset and the evening fountain show.
Two days (the comfortable version). Adds the Kaveri belt and takes the rush out of it — this is the recommended shape for most visitors.
- Day 1 (Madikeri and around): Mandalpatti or Raja's Seat at first light, then Abbey Falls, Madikeri Fort and Omkareshwara Temple, and a plantation walk in the afternoon. Sunset at Raja's Seat.
- Day 2 (the Kushalnagar cluster): Drive east and start at Dubare Elephant Camp for the morning interaction session, then the Golden Temple at Bylakuppe, and Nisargadhama river-island. This trio sits close together around Kushalnagar and makes an efficient, satisfying day.
Three days. Follow the two-day plan and use the extra day for the Talacauvery and Bhagamandala corner to the west — the source of the Kaveri, the Triveni Sangama confluence and the Bhagandeshwara temple — combined with an unhurried second plantation visit, or a slower morning simply enjoying the estate scenery. Alternatively, dedicate the third day to a longer excursion south to Iruppu Falls and the edge of Nagarhole, which needs most of a day given the driving distances.
Coorg with Mysuru (and the coast). Coorg pairs beautifully with Mysuru, about 120 km east, which has its own palace, markets and day trips. A common circuit runs Bengaluru → Mysuru (1–2 nights) → Coorg (2 nights) → back, and it can be extended over the Ghats to the Mangaluru coast for a hills-and-beach combination. Five to six days is comfortable for the fuller loop; a long weekend covers Coorg alone. Whatever the shape, keep the driving legs in daylight and pad the schedule during the monsoon.
