Gangtok · How to Reach

Gangtok has no railway station and, at the time of writing, no dependable scheduled airport of its own, so almost everyone arrives the same way: fly or train into the plains of North Bengal, then climb into the hills by road. The mountain leg is the memorable part — a winding ascent along the Teesta river on National Highway 10 (NH10) — and it is worth understanding the options before you book, because the transfer, not the flight or train, is what usually dictates your first day.

By air. The practical air gateway is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), near Siliguri in West Bengal, roughly 124 km and about 4 to 5 hours by road from Gangtok depending on traffic, roadworks and weather on NH10. Bagdogra is well connected to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and other major cities. From the airport you can take a pre-arranged hotel car, a private taxi, or share a jeep from the Siliguri stands. Sikkim also has its own airport at Pakyong (PYG), only about 30 km from Gangtok and one of India's highest airfields, but its scheduled service has been intermittent and subject to suspension for operational and weather reasons; do not build a tight plan around it without confirming current flights first, and keep Bagdogra as your fallback. A helicopter service has at times linked Bagdogra and Gangtok in around 30 minutes, but it is weather-dependent, small-capacity and frequently unavailable — treat it as a bonus, not a plan.

By train. The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) at Siliguri, about 120–125 km from Gangtok — again roughly a 4-to-5-hour drive on NH10. NJP is a major junction with direct trains from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and much of the country, which makes it the usual rail approach to all of Sikkim. Because live timetables and seat availability change constantly, check current trains and fares in the search box on this page rather than relying on a fixed schedule. From NJP, shared jeeps and taxis to Gangtok leave through the day; the shared jeeps are cheap and frequent, private taxis more comfortable.

By road. NH10 is the single artery linking Sikkim to the plains, running up the Teesta gorge from Siliguri through Rangpo — the entry checkpost into Sikkim — and on to Gangtok. Shared jeeps (Sumos and similar) are the workhorse of the route and depart regularly from Siliguri, NJP and Bagdogra; private taxis and app-arranged cars cost more but let you stop for photos and tea. The road is scenic but slow and, in the monsoon, prone to landslides and delays (see the best-time section) — allow generous buffers and avoid planning a same-day arrival-and-onward-trip that depends on NH10 running clear.

Getting around once you arrive. Central Gangtok is steep but compact, and MG Marg and its surrounds are best explored on foot. For everything else — the ridge viewpoints, the monasteries, the market at Lal Bazaar — local taxis work on point-to-point and "reserve" (half- or full-day) rates; agreeing the fare or hiring for a block of time up front saves haggling. Shared taxis run fixed local routes for locals and budget travellers. The high-altitude day trips east of town (Tsomgo, Nathula) are done only by registered vehicles with permits, arranged the day before through a local operator or the taxi stands. There is also a short cable-car ropeway across the town's mid-levels, more a sightseeing ride than transport, but a lovely way to get a bird's-eye sense of how Gangtok stacks up the hillside.
