Hampi · How to Reach

Hampi sits in Karnataka's interior, in the district now named Vijayanagara (carved out of the old Bellary/Ballari region), and it has no station or airport of its own. The gateway town is Hosapete (also spelled Hospet), about 13 kilometres away, and almost every journey to Hampi routes through it. That extra leg is small, but it means Hampi is best thought of as a "reach Hosapete, then transfer" destination rather than a door-to-door one.

By train. The nearest railhead is Hosapete Junction (station code HPT), roughly 13 kilometres from the Hampi ruins and the practical arrival point for most travellers. It is connected to Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi, Bengaluru's suburban network, Hyderabad/Secunderabad, Goa (Vasco), and other cities, with popular services including overnight trains from Bengaluru that let you sleep on the way and arrive fresh. Hosapete is a modest junction, so direct connections are fewer than at a big-city terminus; from some cities you may change at Ballari (Bellary), Guntakal or Hubballi. By road. Hampi is well connected by bus. State-run and private operators run overnight and daytime coaches to Hosapete from Bengaluru (roughly 340 kilometres, about 6–8 hours), Hubballi, Goa, Hyderabad and other regional hubs; some services continue right up to Hampi Bazaar or the nearby stops. Self-drive and hired cars use the same corridors. From Hosapete, local buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis cover the final stretch to the ruins throughout the day.

By air. The closest airstrip is Jindal Vidyanagar Airport (VDY), also called Vijayanagar Aerodrome, near the JSW steel township roughly 30–40 kilometres away, but it handles only a limited and changeable roster of flights (typically to and from Bengaluru and Hyderabad), so you cannot count on convenient connections through it. The nearest airport with a broader schedule is Hubballi (Hubli) Airport (HBX), about 140–170 kilometres away by road, with domestic flights to several cities. For the widest choice of flights, most travellers use Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), around 340–350 kilometres away, and continue by overnight train or bus. Getting around once you arrive. Distances between the ruins are real — the site sprawls, and walking everything in the heat is not realistic. The common ways to explore are hiring an auto-rickshaw for a half or full day (drivers know a standard circuit and will wait at each monument), renting a bicycle, moped or motorbike for independence, or joining an organised tour. Around the headline sites there are practical constraints to know: at the Vittala Temple, private vehicles stop at a car park and you complete the last stretch on foot or by a shuttle electric buggy, and much of the core is best covered slowly on foot. To reach the north bank (Anegundi and Hippie Island), you cross the Tungabhadra by ferry from the Hampi Bazaar side — a short hop, with the last boat in the early evening (typically around 5:30–6:00 pm; confirm the day's timing locally, and note that crossings can be suspended when the river runs high in the monsoon). Fix auto fares before setting off, carry cash for small entries and the ferry, and start early to beat both the heat and the crowds.
