Sample itineraries for Haridwar
Haridwar rewards even a short visit, and because the core sights are compact you can see a great deal in a day. Below are three ways to structure a stay, from a single evening to a two-day pairing with Rishikesh. In every version, anchor the plan around the evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, and give yourself time to arrive early.
Half a day / one evening (the essentials). Enough to catch the soul of the place if you are only passing through.
- Arrive by late afternoon and walk the ghats as the light softens.
- Claim a spot on the steps at Har Ki Pauri well before dusk for the evening Ganga Aarti.
- Afterwards, wander Bara Bazaar for sweets, prasad and souvenirs, and eat a simple vegetarian dinner in the market.
One full day (the complete city). The standard, comfortable Haridwar day.
- Start early with the quieter morning Aarti or a dawn walk along the ghats, then take the ropeway up to Mansa Devi for the view before the crowds build.
- Cross to Chandi Devi by its ropeway, so you have visited both hilltop goddesses, then come down for lunch in the city.
- In the afternoon visit Maya Devi Temple near the centre and the Daksha Mahadev Temple at Kankhal.
- Return to Har Ki Pauri for the evening Aarti to close the day, then the bazaar.
Two days (Haridwar plus Rishikesh). The most popular shape, treating the two towns as a pair.
- Day 1: the full Haridwar day above โ hilltop temples, Maya Devi and Daksha Mahadev, and the evening Aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
- Day 2: drive the 25 km up to Rishikesh for its own riverfront โ the Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula bridges, the ashrams and yoga scene, the Triveni Ghat aarti, and optional white-water rafting or a short Himalayan-foothills walk. Return to Haridwar in the evening, or continue onward into the hills.
Haridwar as a Char Dham / Uttarakhand gateway. Many travellers use Haridwar as the first or last night of a longer Himalayan trip. A common pattern is to arrive by train or air, spend an evening for the Aarti and a morning for the temples, then set off north toward Rishikesh and the Char Dham shrines (Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri) or the hill stations. On the way back down, a final night in Haridwar to bathe at Har Ki Pauri neatly bookends the pilgrimage. Build in slack for mountain road conditions, which are weather-dependent.
