Jaisalmer works best as a two-to-three-day stop, and most people fold it into a wider Rajasthan loop. Because so much of the appeal is atmospheric — the stone changing colour, the desert at night — the itineraries below deliberately leave room to slow down rather than sprinting between sights. In all cases, aim to be at a good vantage point for at least one sunrise or sunset over the golden stone.

One day (the essentials). Tight, but enough to feel the place if you are passing through.

• Start early inside Jaisalmer Fort while the light is soft and the lanes are quiet — wander the pols, visit the Jain temples (morning hours) and the Raj Mahal palace museum, and take in the rooftop views.
• Late morning, walk down into the old town for the havelis — Patwon Ki Haveli first, then Nathmal and Salim Singh nearby.
• After lunch, drive out to the Sam or Khuri dunes for a camel ride and sunset over the sand, with folk music at a desert camp before returning to town (or stay overnight at the camp).

Two days (the comfortable version). The recommended shape for a first visit.

• Day 1: The fort at sunrise, the Jain temples and palace museum, then the havelis and the old-town lanes. Late afternoon, head to Bada Bagh for sunset over the royal cenotaphs. Evening in town for dinner and rooftop views of the illuminated fort.
• Day 2: Drive out to the desert. Stop at Kuldhara on the way, continue to the Sam or Khuri dunes for a camel safari, sunset, dinner and a cultural programme, and — ideally — an overnight in a desert camp under the stars. Return to Jaisalmer the next morning.

Three days (the unhurried version). Follow the two-day plan and use the extra day either to slow everything down — a boat on Gadisar Lake at dawn, coffee on a fort rooftop, shopping for textiles and leather — or to add a longer excursion: the Desert National Park for wildlife and the Great Indian Bustard, or the drive out to the border temple of Tanot Mata. This pace lets the desert do its work on you rather than treating it as a checklist.

Jaisalmer within a Rajasthan circuit. Because it sits at the far western edge of the state, Jaisalmer is usually reached as part of a Marwar (western Rajasthan) loop rather than on its own. A classic sequence pairs it with Jodhpur (the Blue City, about 285 km / five hours away) and often Bikaner and/or Udaipur, arriving and leaving by the overnight trains or by road. A common rhythm is Jodhpur (2 nights) → Jaisalmer (2 nights, including a desert-camp night) → onward to Bikaner or back toward Jaipur. Allow at least a week if you want to combine Jaisalmer comfortably with two or three other western-Rajasthan cities.
