Sample itineraries for Mumbai

Mumbai rewards a mix of structured sightseeing and unstructured wandering. Below are three ways to shape a visit, from a single focused day to a fuller four-day stay. In all cases, remember that Elephanta is closed on Mondays and that its ferries are weather-dependent, so slot that excursion onto a clear, non-Monday morning.

One day (the essentials). Tight, but it captures the soul of South Mumbai.

  • Start early at the Gateway of India and the Colaba seafront before the crowds and heat build.
  • Walk the heritage core โ€” Kala Ghoda, the CSMVS museum, the Fort precinct, the Oval Maidan, the Rajabai Clock Tower and the Bombay High Court โ€” soaking up the UNESCO-listed Victorian Gothic and Art Deco streetscape.
  • Admire CSMT (from outside), then break for a classic Mumbai lunch โ€” a vada pav or a thali in the Fort area.
  • In the late afternoon, head to Marine Drive, walk its curve, and settle in at Girgaon Chowpatty for street-food snacks and sunset over the "Queen's Necklace".

Two days (the comfortable version). Adds the harbour and the suburbs.

  • Day 1: The South Mumbai heritage day above โ€” Gateway, Colaba, Kala Ghoda, CSMVS, Fort, CSMT, ending at Marine Drive and Chowpatty for sunset.
  • Day 2: A morning ferry to the Elephanta Caves (allow a half-day for the round trip and the climb to the caves). Back on the mainland by mid-afternoon, cross to Bandra for the Sea Link views from Bandstand, the Carter Road promenade, and old-Bandra's lanes, finishing at Juhu Beach for an evening of street food.

Three to four days (the full picture). The ideal length, following the two-day plan and adding depth.

  • Day 3: Go beyond the tourist core โ€” Haji Ali at low tide and Siddhivinayak for the city's living faith, Dhobi Ghat from the bridge, and an ethical, guided Dharavi walk to understand the city's informal economy. Alternatively, spend the day north at Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the Kanheri Caves, or on a pre-booked Film City studio tour.
  • Day 4: Take a day trip out of the city โ€” the car-free hill station of Matheran, the twin hill towns of Lonavala and Khandala on the Pune expressway, or the beaches and forts of Alibaug across the water (see the day-trips section). Return in the evening for a final Marine Drive stroll.

This pace lets you alternate intense city days with a coastal or hill escape, which is exactly how Mumbaikars themselves recharge.
