Pondicherry · How to Reach

Pondicherry sits on the Coromandel (Bay of Bengal) coast of southern India, roughly 150 kilometres south of Chennai, and while it is not a major transport hub in its own right, it is very easy to reach because the giant gateway of Chennai is close by. The key thing to understand is that the town's own rail and air links are limited, so most travellers arrive via Chennai or via the nearby junction town of Villupuram.

By train. Puducherry station (station code PDY) is a terminus rather than a through-station, which limits how many trains serve it directly — you will find a modest set of services, including connections to Chennai and a handful of longer-distance trains, but nothing like the density of a mainline junction. The workhorse railhead for the region is Villupuram Junction (VM), about 35–40 kilometres west on the main Chennai–Tiruchirappalli line, which sees far more trains; from Villupuram it is a short bus or taxi hop into Pondy. For the widest choice of long-distance trains, Chennai Egmore (MS) and Chennai Central (MAS), about 150 kilometres north, are the practical rail gateways, followed by a road transfer. By road. Road is how most visitors actually arrive, and the drive is a pleasure. The East Coast Road (ECR) from Chennai runs about 150 kilometres down the shoreline and typically takes three to four hours, passing Mahabalipuram and a string of beach and backwater stops on the way — one of the nicest coastal drives in India and worth doing in daylight. Frequent government and private buses connect Chennai's main bus terminus with Pondicherry through the day, and buses also run from Bengaluru, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Chidambaram and other Tamil Nadu towns. Private taxis and self-drive cars use the ECR or the inland highway via Villupuram.

By air. Pondicherry has its own small airport — Puducherry Airport (PNY) at Lawspet, a few kilometres from the centre — but it handles only a limited and changeable roster of domestic flights, so you should not build a trip around it without confirming current routes. For almost everyone the practical air gateway is Chennai International Airport (MAA), about 150 kilometres away, which has the full national and international network. From Chennai airport you continue to Pondy by pre-booked taxi down the ECR (roughly three to four hours) or by bus. If you do find a convenient direct flight into PNY, the airport is close to town and only a short drive from the French Quarter; always verify the schedule first.

Getting around once you arrive. This is where Pondy shines: the old town is small, flat and made for walking, and the French Quarter in particular is best explored on foot at a stroll. Many visitors rent a bicycle or a two-wheeler — the classic way to cover the town and reach the out-of-town beaches and Auroville — and rental outfits are easy to find. Auto-rickshaws cover longer hops (agree the fare first, as meters are rarely used), and app-based cabs operate but are less abundant than in a big city. Note that the seafront Promenade is closed to vehicles in the evenings, becoming a pedestrian zone — part of why the town feels so unusually calm after dark.
