Sample itineraries for Pune

Pune works best as a focused one- or two-day visit, with the old city on foot and the forts and hills by car. Below are ways to structure it depending on how much time you have. In all cases, allow for city traffic between clusters, and โ€” if your dates fall in late August or September โ€” be ready for road closures and crowds around the Ganesh festival.

One day (the old-city essentials). Enough to grasp Pune's Peshwa and reform-era heart if you keep moving.

  • Start early at Shaniwar Wada when it is cool and quiet, for the ramparts and the Peshwa story (about an hour).
  • Walk or ride the short distance to the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple in Budhwar Peth for darshan, then browse the surrounding old-city bazaar lanes.
  • Mid-morning, take in the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum for its extraordinary collection of everyday Indian art (an hour or two), and the nearby Pataleshwar Cave Temple for a cool, thousand-year-old contrast.
  • After lunch (a Puneri thali or a plate of misal pav), drive out to the Aga Khan Palace for the Gandhi memorial and gardens.
  • Finish with sunset from Parvati Hill for a panorama over the city, then dinner in the cantonment or Koregaon Park.

Two days (the comfortable version). Adds a fort or hill day and takes the rush out of the city sightseeing.

  • Day 1: The old-city loop above at a relaxed pace โ€” Shaniwar Wada, Dagdusheth temple, Kelkar Museum, Pataleshwar โ€” with time to linger over food and bazaars. Afternoon at the Aga Khan Palace and sunset on Parvati Hill. Evening: catch the Shaniwar Wada sound-and-light show, or explore Koregaon Park.
  • Day 2: An early start for Sinhagad Fort (about 35 km) โ€” trek or drive up, enjoy the ramparts, views and hot pithla-bhakri at the top, and return by early afternoon. Use the rest of the day for whatever you missed โ€” the university heritage building, Shinde Chhatri, or a leisurely cafรฉ-and-shopping afternoon.

Weekend / adding day trips. With a second or third day, swap the fort for a hill excursion. The classic is the Lonavalaโ€“Khandala belt on the Mumbai expressway (about 65โ€“70 km) for ghat viewpoints, caves and chikki, or a longer run to Mahabaleshwar (about 120 km) for strawberry country and plateau lookouts. History-minded travellers can make the pilgrimage to Shivneri Fort near Junnar (about 90โ€“100 km), the birthplace of Shivaji. Any of these is a full day; see the day-trips section for details.

Pune as a base or a stopover. Because it is only about three hours from Mumbai by expressway or fast train, Pune slots neatly onto a western-India itinerary โ€” a cultural and hill-country counterpoint to the coast. Two nights lets you do the city and one big excursion comfortably; three opens up the Sahyadri forts and hill stations properly.
