Best time to visit Puri

The clear answer is October to February, the cool, dry stretch of the year when the coast is at its most pleasant. Puri has a hot, humid tropical climate strongly shaped by the sea and the monsoon, and the season you choose makes a real difference to how comfortable the days feel. The figures below follow the kind of long-term climate normals compiled by the India Meteorological Department; treat them as typical averages rather than a forecast for your specific dates.

Winter (October–February) is the ideal window. The heat and humidity ease, skies clear, and daytime temperatures sit in a comfortable range — broadly the low-to-high 20s Celsius, with cooler mornings and evenings that make sunrise on the beach genuinely pleasant. December and January are the coolest months, with night-time lows that can dip toward the high teens. The sea breeze keeps afternoons manageable, the light is good for photography, and conditions are right for both temple visits and long spells on the sand. This is peak tourist season, so expect more crowds and higher room rates around the winter holidays.

Summer (March–June) is hot and sticky. Coastal humidity makes the heat feel heavier than the thermometer suggests, with daytime highs commonly climbing into the mid-30s Celsius and the air close and moist. The sea moderates the worst of it compared with inland Odisha, and early mornings and evenings on the beach can still be enjoyable, but midday sightseeing — especially around the sun-baked temple and Konark — is draining. If you travel in these months, go early, carry water, and rest through the hottest hours. Summer does, however, contain the town's single biggest event: the Rath Yatra, which usually falls in June or July.

Monsoon (June–September) brings the southwest monsoon and the bulk of the year's rain, with annual rainfall on the order of 1,300 millimetres or more, most of it concentrated in these months. The rains cool things down and green the landscape, and a stormy Bay of Bengal has its own drama, but expect humidity, heavy downpours, rough seas and the occasional disrupted plan. It is a workable shoulder season for travellers who don't mind carrying an umbrella, and it overlaps with the tail of the Rath Yatra period, but swimming conditions can be poor and unsafe when the surf is high.

A serious seasonal caveat for this coast is cyclones. The Bay of Bengal is one of the world's more cyclone-prone basins, and the Odisha coast — Puri included — faces a raised risk of tropical cyclones in the pre-monsoon (roughly April–May) and especially the post-monsoon (October–November) periods. Most trips are unaffected, but severe storms do reach this coast, and Puri has been hit directly in recent memory. If you travel in those windows, keep an eye on IMD advisories and build a little flexibility into your plans; local authorities issue warnings well in advance.

The other reason to time a visit is the festival calendar. The Rath Yatra (June/July) is the headline event and transforms the town, but it also brings immense crowds — inspiring for some travellers, overwhelming for others. For a calmer, more comfortable trip focused on sightseeing and the beach, the winter months are the safe recommendation.
