Sample itineraries for Rishikesh
Rishikesh flexes easily between a fast spiritual sampler and a slow, week-long retreat. Below are three ways to shape a visit. In all of them, anchor at least one evening Ganga Aarti and, if the season allows, a morning on the river.
One day (the essentials). Enough for a strong first impression, and a common shape for a stop en route to the mountains.
- Start early with a morning walk along the ghats or a drop-in yoga class, and a riverside breakfast.
- Cross the Ganges on foot (or by ferry where the bridges are closed) to the Swargashram side and wander the ashrams, temples and market lanes around Ram Jhula.
- Spend the afternoon at the Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia) among the murals and meditation domes.
- End with the Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan or Triveni Ghat as the light fades.
Two days (the comfortable version). Splits the town's two personalities across a day each.
- Day 1 โ spiritual Rishikesh: morning yoga; the ghats, footbridges and ashrams of Swargashram; the Beatles Ashram in the afternoon; the evening Ganga Aarti. Dinner at a riverside cafรฉ.
- Day 2 โ adventure or hills: either a morning rafting run from Shivpuri (in season), or an early drive up to Kunjapuri for sunrise followed by the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple. Keep the evening for a second, different aarti or a meditation session.
Three days. Follow the two-day plan and use the extra day either to slow down โ more yoga, a cooking or ayurveda session, an afternoon at Vashishta Gufa for meditation โ or to take a day trip to Haridwar (about 25 km) for its grand Har Ki Pauri Ganga Aarti and hilltop temples. This pace lets you treat Rishikesh as a place to breathe rather than a set of sights to tick off.
As a yoga or meditation base (one week and up). Many visitors come specifically to study. A 200-hour teacher-training course typically runs three to four weeks; shorter retreats of a week or two are widely available, as are open-ended ashram stays. If this is your aim, base yourself in Tapovan or Swargashram, keep sightseeing light, and fold a rafting day or a temple sunrise in as a break from the mat.
As a Himalayan gateway. Rishikesh is the classic launch point for the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath) and for treks and journeys deeper into Garhwal. A common pattern is a night or two here to acclimatise, sort logistics and take darshan before heading up the mountain highways past Devprayag and Rudraprayag. The Char Dham season runs roughly April to November.
