Sample itineraries for Shirdi
Shirdi is compact and its sites are clustered, so even a short visit can be complete and unhurried if you plan around the aarti schedule and the darshan queues. Below are two ways to structure a stay, plus a note on extending it with day trips. In all cases, the single most useful habit is to book darshan/aarti passes and accommodation through the Sansthan Trust in advance, and to verify current timings via the Sansthan before you fix your plan.
One day (the focused pilgrimage). Enough to complete the essentials if you start early.
- Arrive the night before if you can, so you are in town for the pre-dawn Kakad Aarti โ the most atmospheric moment of the day.
- After the aarti, join the queue for darshan at the Samadhi Mandir while the crowds are relatively lighter.
- Mid-morning, walk the core circuit on foot: Dwarkamai (for the dhuni and udi), the Chavadi, Gurusthan and Lendi Baug, all within a few minutes of each other.
- Take your midday meal as prasad at the Prasadalaya, and, if the schedule allows, attend the Madhyan (noon) Aarti.
- In the afternoon, visit the Sai Baba Museum and the Khandoba Mandir, then return for the Dhoop (evening) Aarti to close the day before your onward journey.
Two days (the comfortable version). Takes the rush out of the queues and lets the town's rhythm sink in.
- Day 1: Arrive, settle in, and orient yourself. Attend the Dhoop Aarti in the evening and, if it is a Thursday, watch the Chavadi palki procession. Take darshan if the queue is manageable.
- Day 2: Rise for the Kakad Aarti, take an unhurried darshan, then walk the full circuit of Dwarkamai, Chavadi, Gurusthan and Lendi Baug at leisure. Include the Museum and Khandoba Mandir, eat at the Prasadalaya, and leave time to simply sit in the complex. This slower pace suits first-time visitors who want to absorb the devotion rather than tick off sites.
Extending your trip with day trips. Because Shirdi is so central, two or three extra days let you fold in the region's famous excursions without changing base โ the Shani temple at Shani Shingnapur, the temple-city and vineyards of Nashik, the Jyotirlinga at Trimbakeshwar, and the World Heritage rock-cut caves of Ellora near Aurangabad. See the day-trips section for distances and details. A common pattern is two days for Shirdi itself plus one or two more for the surrounding sites, using a hired car for the longer runs.
