Agra sits at one of the busiest crossroads in northern India, which makes it easy to reach from almost every direction. The city lies on the main railway trunk routes running south and east out of Delhi — the Delhi–Mumbai line and the Delhi–Kolkata line both pass through — so a very large share of long-distance trains stop here. That density of connections is Agra's biggest travel advantage: wherever you are coming from, there is usually a direct train.

By train. The principal station is Agra Cantt (station code AGC), which handles most express and superfast services and sits a short auto or taxi ride southwest of the main monuments. From Delhi, the fastest options are the semi-high-speed Gatimaan Express — India's fastest train, running from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt and covering the route in around 100 minutes — and the long-established Shatabdi Express. Both make a same-day Taj visit from Delhi entirely feasible. Agra has several other stations (Agra Fort, Raja Ki Mandi, Idgah), but for most travellers AGC is the one to book. By road. The Yamuna Expressway, a six-lane access-controlled motorway, links Greater Noida (on Delhi's edge) to Agra and has transformed the drive. The Delhi–Agra road distance is roughly 230 kilometres, and the run typically takes about three to four hours depending on where in Delhi you start and traffic at the toll plazas. Self-drive, private taxi and inter-city buses all use this corridor. The expressway is fast but demands care in winter, when dense morning fog can cut visibility sharply (see the best-time section).

By air. Agra has its own airport — Agra Airport (AGR), also called Kheria — but it is a dual-use military and civil-enclave facility with only a limited, changeable roster of domestic flights, so you cannot rely on convenient connections through it. For most travellers the practical air gateway is Delhi (DEL), about 230 kilometres away, from where you continue by fast train or by road on the expressway. If you do find a suitable direct flight into AGR, the airport is close to the city and only a short drive from the centre. Always confirm current AGR routes before planning around them.

Getting around once you arrive. Within Agra, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, battery-powered e-rickshaws and app-based cabs cover the city. A prepaid taxi and auto counter at Agra Cantt helps you avoid haggling on arrival, and fixing a fare or using a metered app before you set off saves friction elsewhere. Crucially, there is a restricted-vehicle zone around the Taj Mahal: to protect the marble from pollution, petrol and diesel vehicles are not allowed within a set radius of the monument. You will be dropped at a parking area and complete the last stretch on foot, by electric bus/cart, e-rickshaw, or cycle-rickshaw.
