Sample itineraries for Agra
Agra flexes to fit the time you have. Below are three ways to structure a visit, from a focused single day to the full Golden Triangle. In all cases, front-load the Taj Mahal โ ideally at sunrise โ and remember it is closed on Fridays, which should anchor the whole plan.
One day (the essentials). Tight but very doable, and the standard shape of a day trip from Delhi.
- Arrive early (sunrise, or on an early fast train from Delhi) and go straight to the Taj Mahal while the light is soft and crowds are thin. Give it two hours.
- Mid-morning, move to Agra Fort, about ten minutes away, for the palace complex and its distant Taj view (1.5โ2 hours).
- Lunch in the city, then cross the river to Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj) for a quieter, close-up look at Mughal inlay.
- If time and energy allow, finish at Mehtab Bagh for sunset over the Taj across the Yamuna before your onward journey.
Two days (the comfortable version). Adds the sites most one-day trips skip and takes the rush out of it.
- Day 1: Taj Mahal at sunrise, then Agra Fort, lunch, and Itmad-ud-Daulah in the afternoon. End with sunset at Mehtab Bagh. Evening for the bazaars and a Mughlai dinner.
- Day 2: Half-day excursion to Fatehpur Sikri (40 km) in the morning, returning by early afternoon. Use the rest of the day for Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra, a marble-inlay workshop, or the old city โ Jama Masjid, Mankameshwar Temple and Chini Ka Rauza โ at an unhurried pace.
Three days. Follow the two-day plan and use the extra day either to slow everything down or to add a day trip โ Mathura and Vrindavan for their Krishna temples, or the Keoladeo (Bharatpur) bird sanctuary for birdwatchers. This pace lets you revisit the Taj in different light and treat the lesser monuments as destinations rather than checkboxes.
Agra in the Golden Triangle. Agra is the middle point of India's most popular tourist circuit, DelhiโAgraโJaipur, a loop of roughly 700โ720 km by road with each leg around 230โ270 km. A classic version runs:
- Delhi (2 nights) โ Old and New Delhi sightseeing.
- Travel to Agra via the Yamuna Expressway (or fast train); Agra (1โ2 nights) for the Taj, Fort and Fatehpur Sikri (often visited en route to Jaipur).
- Travel to Jaipur (about 240 km, roughly 4โ5 hours, commonly stopping at Fatehpur Sikri and Abhaneri on the way); Jaipur (2 nights) for the Pink City's forts and palaces.
- Return to Delhi (about 270 km) to close the triangle.
A week is comfortable for the full circuit; five days is the practical minimum if you don't mind moving briskly.
