Ahmedabad is Gujarat's principal gateway and one of the best-connected cities in western India, with a busy international airport, a major railway junction and fast highway links, so reaching it is rarely the hard part of a trip.

By air. The city's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (airport code AMD), at Hansol about 9 kilometres north of the centre, is Gujarat's busiest, with a domestic terminal (T1) and an international terminal (T2). It handles frequent domestic flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and other major cities, plus international connections to the Gulf and beyond. The airport is a short drive from the old city and the western business districts; pre-paid and app-based taxis and autos serve both terminals. Because routes and frequencies change, confirm current flights before planning around a specific connection.

By train. The main station is Ahmedabad Junction (station code ADI), universally known as Kalupur station, on the western edge of the old city and an important hub of the Western Railway. It is exceptionally well connected — direct trains run to Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai and across Gujarat, and the route to Mumbai is served by premium fast services including Vande Bharat and Shatabdi-class trains. The city has several secondary stations (Sabarmati, Maninagar, Gandhigram, Asarva), but for most travellers ADI is the one to book. By road. Ahmedabad sits on the national highway grid with fast links in every direction. The Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway connects south towards Vadodara, Surat and eventually Mumbai; well-maintained highways run north to Gandhinagar and Mehsana and west towards Rajkot and the Saurashtra peninsula. State and private long-distance buses, including comfortable air-conditioned Volvo coaches and Gujarat's GSRTC services, connect the city to towns across the state and to neighbouring Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Self-drive and hired car-with-driver are both practical, and a car is the easiest way to combine the out-of-town stepwells and temples on a day trip.

Getting around once you arrive. Ahmedabad has a growing metro network whose lines cross the city and connect useful points including the areas around Kalupur station and the old city; it is cheap, air-conditioned and easy for longer hops. On the surface, the city runs the BRTS (Janmarg) bus rapid transit on dedicated lanes and the older AMTS city buses, alongside plentiful auto-rickshaws (insist on the meter or agree a fare first) and app-based cabs and autos, which are the simplest option for visitors. The old city itself is best explored on foot — its lanes are too narrow and tangled for anything else — while a mix of metro, autos and cabs handles the spread-out sights across the river. Traffic in the core can be dense, so allow extra time between the old city and the newer western neighbourhoods.
