Sample itineraries for Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad flexes to fit the time you have, but two full days is the sweet spot for the city itself, with a third day freeing you to reach the UNESCO-listed sites to the north. In all cases, try to start early — the light is best, the heat is lowest, and the flagship experience, the old-city Heritage Walk, is a morning event.
One day (the essentials). Tight but doable if you keep moving.
- Begin at dawn with the Heritage Walk through the pols, ending at the Jama Masjid.
- Continue on foot or by a short hop to the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, Bhadra Fort and Teen Darwaza in the old-city core.
- Cross the river for the late morning at Sabarmati Ashram, giving Gandhi's home and museum an unhurried hour or more.
- In the afternoon, relax at the Sabarmati Riverfront or Kankaria Lake, then end the day at Manek Chowk, which turns into a street-food carnival after about 9 pm.
Two days (the comfortable version). Adds the out-of-town stepwell and the museums, and takes the rush out of it.
- Day 1: Old city in the morning — the Heritage Walk, Jama Masjid, Sidi Saiyyed, Bhadra Fort and Teen Darwaza — then the Hutheesing Jain Temple. Afternoon at Sabarmati Ashram, evening at the Riverfront and a Gujarati thali or the Manek Chowk stalls.
- Day 2: Morning half-day trip to the Adalaj Stepwell (about 18 km), optionally continuing to Akshardham in Gandhinagar for its exhibitions and evening water show. Back in the city, use spare time for the Calico Museum of Textiles (pre-booked) or Kankaria Lake and Auto World.
Three days. Follow the two-day plan and use the extra day for a longer excursion north — the pairing of the Modhera Sun Temple and Rani Ki Vav at Patan (a UNESCO World Heritage stepwell) makes an outstanding full-day trip, or head west to the Nal Sarovar bird sanctuary in winter, or south to the Harappan site of Lothal. This slower pace also lets you revisit the old city, browse the markets, and treat the food scene as a destination in itself.
Ahmedabad in a wider Gujarat trip. The city is the natural gateway to the state and works as the launching point for longer circuits — south to Vadodara and the Statue of Unity, west to Saurashtra (Junagadh, Somnath, Gir), or the celebrated run to Kutch and the white salt desert of the Rann, especially during the winter Rann Utsav. Two days in Ahmedabad at the start sets up any of these beautifully.
