Best time to visit Bengaluru

Bengaluru's headline selling point is its weather. Perched at around 900 metres on the Deccan plateau, the city enjoys a mild, moderated version of a tropical climate, and it is genuinely pleasant for far more of the year than most Indian cities. There is no brutal summer to hide from and no bitter winter to bundle against — which is exactly why it grew as a garden retreat. That said, the ideal window is October to February, when clear post-monsoon skies meet the coolest, most comfortable temperatures of the year. The figures below follow the pattern of climate normals compiled by the India Meteorological Department; treat them as typical averages, not a forecast for your specific dates.

Winter (November–February) is the pick of the year. Days are mild and sunny, generally in the low-to-high 20s Celsius, and evenings turn genuinely cool — nights in December and January can dip toward the mid-teens and occasionally lower, so pack a light jacket or sweater for early mornings and rooftop dinners. Skies are clear, humidity is low, the gardens look their best, and the whole city is comfortable to explore on foot. This is also when the popular day trips — Nandi Hills at sunrise especially — are at their most rewarding.

Summer (March–May) is the warm season by Bengaluru's gentle standards, with April usually the hottest month. Even so, "hot" here means daytime highs commonly in the low-to-mid 30s Celsius rather than the punishing 40s of the north Indian plains, and evenings stay relatively pleasant thanks to the altitude. Pre-monsoon thundershowers often arrive in April and May, cooling the air and greening the city. It is a perfectly workable time to visit, especially for travellers escaping harsher heat elsewhere; just carry water and sun cover for the middle of the day.

Monsoon (June–October) brings the rains, and Bengaluru is unusual in catching both the southwest monsoon (roughly June–September) and, being on the plateau's edge, the tail of the northeast monsoon, so wet weather can linger into October. Rainfall tends to come as sharp afternoon and evening downpours rather than all-day rain, the temperatures are mild and the parks are lush — but the flip side is that heavy spells can flood low-lying junctions and snarl the city's already-stretched traffic. It is a fine shoulder season for flexible travellers who don't mind carrying an umbrella and building slack into their plans.

Because the climate is so even, there is no month you must avoid outright — even the "worst" of Bengaluru's weather is mild by Indian standards. The nudge toward October to February is really about getting the clearest skies and the crispest evenings, plus the best conditions for the surrounding hills and waterfalls.

One cultural reason to consider March or April despite the warmth is the Bengaluru Karaga, the city's most important traditional festival (see the culture section), which falls on the Chaitra full moon. If your dates line up, it is an extraordinary spectacle — though it sits just outside the ideal-weather window.
