How to reach Bengaluru
As a major metro and the capital of Karnataka, Bengaluru is one of the best-connected cities in southern India, with a large international airport, several railway stations on the main southern trunk routes, and highways radiating in every direction. Getting here is rarely the hard part.
By air. Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) at Devanahalli is one of the busiest airports in the country, with wide domestic coverage and a growing roster of international routes. It sits about 40 kilometres north of the city centre, so budget a real transfer — typically 60–90 minutes by road, and longer in heavy traffic. Options into town include the official airport taxi counters, app-based cabs, and the frequent, comfortable Vayu Vajra airport buses run by the state transport corporation, which serve major neighbourhoods at a fraction of a cab fare. A suburban rail and metro link toward the airport has been under development, so check current options when you arrive.
By train. Bengaluru lies on the main southern railway network and has several stations. The principal one is KSR Bengaluru City Junction (station code SBC) — formally Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna station, and long known simply as Bangalore City — which handles the bulk of long-distance and inter-city trains and sits centrally beside the main bus stations. Other important stations include Yesvantpur Junction (YPR) in the northwest, Bengaluru Cantonment (BNC) near the MG Road area, and the newer Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT Bengaluru) at Baiyappanahalli in the east, built to relieve the main junction. Fast Vande Bharat and Shatabdi services connect Bengaluru with Chennai, Mysuru, Hubballi and other cities. By road. National highways fan out from Bengaluru in every direction — toward Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune/Mumbai, Mangaluru and Mysuru — and several are fast four- or six-lane corridors. The Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway has cut the drive to Mysuru sharply, and access-controlled stretches serve the Chennai and Hyderabad routes. Long-distance and state buses use the huge Kempegowda Bus Station (Majestic) and the adjacent Satellite and Shantinagar terminals; private operators run overnight sleeper coaches to cities across the south. Self-drive and hired cars are popular for the many day trips.
Getting around once you arrive. Bengaluru's growing Namma Metro is the single best way to beat traffic on the corridors it covers, linking areas such as Majestic, MG Road, Indiranagar and beyond; its lines keep expanding, so check the current network map. Beyond the metro, app-based cabs and auto-rickshaws are ubiquitous — insist on the meter or use an app to avoid haggling — and the state runs an extensive city bus network. The honest caveat is traffic: Bengaluru's congestion is legendary, peak-hour crawls are real, and short hops can take far longer than the distance suggests. Cluster your plans by neighbourhood, travel off-peak where you can, and lean on the metro for the busy central corridors.
