Darjeeling sits high on a ridge with no airport and no broad-gauge mainline of its own, so almost everyone arrives the same way: they get to the plains at the foot of the hills — the Siliguri corridor — and then climb the last stretch by road or on the narrow-gauge toy train. Getting the plains leg right is the key to a smooth trip.

By air. The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), near Siliguri, roughly 90 kilometres from Darjeeling. It is the region's main air gateway and has good domestic connections to Kolkata, Delhi and other major cities, with some seasonal wider links. From Bagdogra the onward journey to Darjeeling is by road and typically takes around three to three-and-a-half hours, climbing from the plains into the hills. Prepaid taxis and shared vehicles operate from the airport; because flight schedules and routes change, confirm current services before planning tight connections.

By train. There is no direct broad-gauge train to Darjeeling itself. The nearest major railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), on the edge of Siliguri, which is one of the best-connected stations in the region and is served by long-distance expresses from Kolkata, Delhi, and much of the country. From NJP you complete the journey to Darjeeling by road (about three to three-and-a-half hours) or, for the experience, on the toy train. The toy train (Darjeeling Himalayan Railway). The narrow-gauge line — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — runs the roughly 88 kilometres up from NJP and Siliguri to Darjeeling, and riding it is a destination in itself. Be realistic about what it involves: the full ascent is slow, taking the better part of a day (commonly around seven hours or more), and services can be affected by weather and landslides in the monsoon. Most visitors treat the full-length ride as an experience to plan for deliberately, and instead do one of the short joy rides from Darjeeling — typically the round trip to Ghoom via Batasia Loop — as a highlight during their stay. Steam and diesel services and seasonal timetables vary, so book ahead and verify current operations.

By road. The standard way up from Siliguri, NJP or Bagdogra is by shared jeep (the ubiquitous "Sumo" shared taxis), private taxi, or bus. Shared jeeps run frequently from set stands in Siliguri and are the local workhorse; private taxis cost more but let you stop for photographs on the way up. The mountain road (the Hill Cart Road corridor and its alternatives) is scenic but winding, and journey times stretch in bad weather. Landslides during and just after the monsoon can close or divert routes, so build in a buffer and check road conditions locally in the rainy months.

Getting around once you arrive. Central Darjeeling is compact, steep and, in its heart around Chowrasta and the Mall, largely pedestrian — the best way to explore the core is on foot, though be ready for sharp gradients and thin air. For the sights spread around the town (Tiger Hill, the zoo and mountaineering institute, Ghoom, Batasia Loop, tea estates), the standard arrangement is to hire a shared or private jeep/taxi for a half-day or full-day "sightseeing" circuit; drivers know the standard loops and rates. The Darjeeling Ropeway (Rangeet Valley cable car) offers a scenic descent over the tea gardens as an attraction in its own right. Fix fares or use set rates before you set off, and note that some viewpoints and areas require a small permit arranged locally.
