Sample itineraries for Darjeeling

Darjeeling rewards two to three unhurried days. Mountain weather makes the mornings the priority — clear skies are far more common at dawn than in the afternoon — so the plans below front-load the big views. Build in slack for the steep walking and the thin air, and don't over-schedule.

One day (the essentials). Tight, but enough to hit the highlights if the weather cooperates.

  • Pre-dawn: drive up to Tiger Hill for sunrise over Kanchenjunga. Wrap up warm.
  • On the way back, stop at Batasia Loop for the toy-train loop, the war memorial garden and the town view, and at Ghoom Monastery for the Maitreya Buddha.
  • Mid-morning, visit the shared complex of the Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute.
  • Afternoon, ride a toy-train joy ride or the ropeway, then finish with an evening stroll along the Mall and Chowrasta.

Two days (the comfortable version). Adds tea and the quieter sights and takes the rush out of it.

  • Day 1: Tiger Hill at dawn, then Batasia Loop and Ghoom Monastery on the return; the zoo and HMI in the late morning; afternoon at leisure around Chowrasta, Observatory Hill and the Mall.
  • Day 2: A slower morning — walk or ride down to the Happy Valley Tea Estate for a garden and factory visit, then the Japanese Peace Pagoda and the ropeway. Keep the evening for shopping on the Mall and a long tea or a Tibetan dinner.

Three days. Follow the two-day plan and use the third day for a day trip — most popularly to Mirik for its lake and tea-clad hills, to Kurseong down the toy-train line, or across to Kalimpong — or simply to slow everything down, revisit a viewpoint in different light, and settle into the town's rhythm. Three days is also the sensible minimum if you want to fold in a serious tea-estate visit and a day trip without feeling rushed.

Darjeeling in a wider North Bengal / Sikkim trip. Many travellers combine Darjeeling with Gangtok (Sikkim) and/or Kalimpong into a week-long Eastern Himalayan loop, entering and exiting through NJP/Bagdogra. A common shape is two to three nights in Darjeeling, then a transfer to Kalimpong or on to Sikkim (which requires its own permits for certain areas), returning to the plains at the end. If Sikkim is on the plan, check current inner-line/permit requirements for the areas you intend to visit before you travel.
