South Goa is well connected by air, rail and road, and — usefully — the main airport and the main railway junction both sit close to the district, so you rarely have far to travel from your point of arrival to your beach.

By air. The state's long-established gateway is Goa International Airport at Dabolim (GOI), near Vasco da Gama on the Zuari estuary. It is the more convenient of Goa's two airports for the south, typically within a 40-minute to just-over-an-hour drive of the central Colva–Benaulim–Varca belt, and a little longer to Palolem and Agonda in the far south. Dabolim handles domestic flights from cities across India and a changeable roster of international charters and scheduled services. Since 2023 Goa also has a second airport — the Manohar International Airport at Mopa (GOX) in the far north — but that one is a longer transfer to the southern beaches, so if you are heading south, favour a Dabolim arrival where you have the choice. Prepaid taxi counters operate at the airport; agree the fare or use an app before setting off. By train. South Goa is a stop on the Konkan Railway, the coastal line that runs down the Western Ghats from Mumbai to Mangalore, and this is one of the most scenic and comfortable ways to arrive — the monsoon-season run in particular, through tunnels, over viaducts and past waterfalls, is a journey in its own right. The principal station is Madgaon (station code MAO) at Margao, a major junction that handles long-distance trains from Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bengaluru, Mangalore, Kerala and beyond, including premium and superfast services. Madgaon is centrally placed for the whole district — a short ride to the Colva belt, and the natural railhead for onward road transfer to Palolem. By road. Goa is linked to Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru by national highways, and inter-state and inter-city buses run to Margao's Kadamba bus stand. The coastal drive down from Mumbai is long (a full day) but takes in classic Konkan scenery; from Bengaluru and the Karnataka interior the approach is over the Ghats. Self-drive and private taxis are both common. Distances within Goa are short — the state is compact — but the roads wind, so allow more time than the raw kilometres suggest.

Getting around once you arrive. Within South Goa, options include app-based cabs, local taxis (often on fixed point-to-point rates rather than meters), and the ubiquitous rented two-wheeler, which is how a large share of visitors get about — scooters and motorcycles are cheap to hire and ideal for the short hops between beaches, though you should carry a valid licence, wear a helmet and ride cautiously on the narrow village lanes. There are also local buses between the main towns and beaches, cheap but slow and infrequent by evening. The characterful Goan motorcycle taxi (the "pilot"), a licensed pillion ride on the back of a bike, still operates in places for solo travellers with little luggage. For beach-hopping over a few days, many visitors find hiring a scooter or arranging a car with a driver the least stressful approach.
