South Goa ยท Suggested Itineraries
Sample itineraries for South Goa
South Goa rewards a slow pace, so these itineraries deliberately avoid cramming. In all of them, treat one beach as your "home" base and make short trips out from it, rather than moving hotels every night.
Two days (a taste). Enough for a first impression if a short break or a side-trip from the north is all you have.
- Day 1: Settle into a central beach โ Colva or Benaulim โ and do very little: a long beach walk, a shack lunch of fish curry rice, a swim, and sunset over the Arabian Sea. In the late afternoon, wander Margao's old Latin Quarter and market if you want a dose of town life.
- Day 2: Drive north for a half-day at Old Goa, taking in the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Se Cathedral, then loop back via a spice plantation near Ponda for lunch before returning to the coast.
Three to four days (the comfortable version). The sweet spot for South Goa, blending beach, heritage and a bit of nature.
- Day 1: Arrive and unwind on the central ColvaโBenaulimโVarca belt. Beach, lunch, sunset.
- Day 2: Heritage day โ Old Goa's churches in the morning, a spice plantation at midday, and the Chandor mansions or the Rachol/Loutolim heritage villages in the afternoon, back to the coast for the evening.
- Day 3: Head south to Palolem and Agonda โ a boat trip for dolphins and the hidden coves (Butterfly Beach), or simply a lazy day on Palolem's crescent, with sunset drinks over the bay.
- Day 4: Nature โ a Dudhsagar Falls jeep safari (best outside the monsoon) or a gentle morning at Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary and Cabo de Rama Fort, then a final beach evening.
Five days or more (unhurried). Follow the four-day plan and use the extra days to go deeper: a second, quieter beach base in the far south (Agonda or Patnem); a day among the Western Ghats sanctuaries โ Cotigao or the waterfalls and bubble-lake of Netravali; a river cruise on the Sal or Mandovi; or simply repeating your favourite beach day. With five days you can also justify a day trip up to North Goa โ Panaji's Fontainhas quarter, or the northern beaches โ to see the contrast for yourself before retreating south again.
South Goa also makes an excellent quieter base for a whole-Goa holiday: stay in the south for calm and food, and treat the busier north as an occasional day out rather than your home turf.
