How to reach Kochi

Kochi is the best-connected city in Kerala and one of the major transport hubs of south India, so reaching it is rarely a problem from anywhere in the country. The one thing worth understanding before you arrive is the city's geography: the airport, the main railway stations and the historic quarter of Fort Kochi are spread quite far apart across the harbour, so plan the last leg of your journey as carefully as the long-distance one.

By air. Cochin International Airport (COK), at Nedumbassery, is Kerala's busiest airport and the main air gateway for the whole state. It sits roughly 25โ€“30 kilometres northeast of the city centre, so budget 45 minutes to over an hour by taxi to reach Ernakulam, and longer again to cross to Fort Kochi. The airport handles extensive domestic connections to all the major Indian metros as well as a heavy schedule of international flights, particularly to the Gulf, reflecting Kerala's deep ties to the region. Prepaid and app-based taxis operate from the terminal; there are also airport bus services into the city. Because routes and timings change, confirm current connections before planning around them.

By train. Kochi has two main railway stations, both on the mainland in Ernakulam. Ernakulam Junction (station code ERS), also called Ernakulam South, is the principal and busier station and the one most long-distance expresses use; Ernakulam Town (ERN), or Ernakulam North, is the secondary station. There is also a smaller station across the water near Fort Kochi. Kochi sits on the main coastal trunk line, with frequent services north toward Mangaluru, Goa and Mumbai and south toward Thiruvananthapuram, plus long-distance trains to Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi and beyond. For most visitors ERS is the station to aim for. Because live timetables and seat availability change constantly, check current trains and fares in the search box on this page rather than relying on a fixed schedule.

By road. Kochi lies on National Highway 66, the coastal artery running the length of Kerala's shoreline, and is well linked inland toward Tamil Nadu. State-run and private long-distance buses connect it to every major town in Kerala and to neighbouring states, arriving at the city's bus stands in Ernakulam. Self-drive and hired car-with-driver are both popular, especially for onward trips into the backwaters and hills, where having your own vehicle is a real advantage.

By sea and ferry โ€” and getting around. This is where Kochi is unusual. Because the city is split across islands and peninsulas, the state-run passenger ferries are not just a novelty but a genuine part of the transport network, linking Ernakulam, Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Vypin and Willingdon Island across the harbour. The ferry from Ernakulam to Fort Kochi is cheap, scenic and often faster than the road, which loops the long way round by bridge. A modern water metro also runs electric boats between island terminals. On land, auto-rickshaws, app-based cabs and city buses cover the rest; within compact Fort Kochi, walking or a rented bicycle is the nicest way to move. Agree auto fares in advance or use a metered app, and factor the harbour crossings into your timings โ€” the distances on a map are deceptive.
