Sample itineraries for Kochi

Kochi's core sights are concentrated in the compact, walkable quarters of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, which makes it easy to see the essentials in a short stay while leaving the modern city and the wider region for extra time. Below are three ways to shape a visit. In all of them, keep the historic quarter for daylight walking and save the waterfront for the golden hour before sunset.

One day (the essentials). Enough to catch the highlights if Kochi is a stopover, though it will feel brisk.

  • Start the morning in Fort Kochi: the Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront, then St Francis Church and the colourful Santa Cruz Basilica, all within an easy walk of one another.
  • Continue into Mattancherry for the Dutch Palace (Mattancherry Palace) and its murals, then the Paradesi Synagogue and a browse through the antique and spice shops of Jew Town. (Remember the synagogue closes on Saturdays and the palace may close on certain days.)
  • Break for a Kerala lunch, then cross to the mainland for a late-afternoon stroll on Marine Drive and a harbour or backwater boat ride.
  • End with an early-evening Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance in Fort Kochi.

Two days (the comfortable version). The recommended length, taking the rush out of the essentials and adding time on the water.

  • Day 1 โ€” Fort Kochi: the fishing nets at first light or late afternoon, St Francis Church, Santa Cruz Basilica, and a slow, unhurried wander through the old streets, art cafes and galleries on foot or by bicycle. Time a return to the waterfront for sunset behind the nets, then an evening cultural performance.
  • Day 2 โ€” Mattancherry and the water: the Dutch Palace and its murals in the morning, the Paradesi Synagogue and Jew Town's shops, and lunch in the quarter. In the afternoon take a longer backwater or harbour cruise, and finish on Marine Drive in Ernakulam for the city's evening buzz and dinner.

Three days or more. With a third day you can slow the two-day plan down and add a day trip โ€” the Alleppey backwaters, Cherai Beach on Vypin Island, or the Athirappilly Falls and Kodanad elephant centre inland (see the day-trips section). Travellers with a week are better off treating Kochi as the launch pad for a wider Kerala loop โ€” pairing the city with the backwaters and the tea hills of Munnar โ€” rather than lingering longer in the city itself.

Kochi as a Kerala gateway. Most visitors fold Kochi into a larger circuit. A classic route runs Kochi (2 nights) for the city, then inland to Munnar (2 nights) for tea estates and cool hill air, and down to the Alleppey/Kumarakom backwaters (1โ€“2 nights) for a houseboat night, before returning to Kochi to fly out. A week is comfortable for this loop; five days is the practical minimum if you keep moving.
