Sample itineraries for Lucknow

Lucknow's core sights concentrate neatly in and around the old city, which means a well-planned two days covers the essentials comfortably. Below are ways to structure a visit, from a single focused day to a longer trip that uses the city as a base for the wider region. Wherever possible, tackle the old-city monuments in the morning, when the light is soft and the heat is manageable, and save Hazratganj and the riverside for the evening.

One day (the essentials). Tight but very doable if you start early.

  • Begin at the Bara Imambara soon after opening, giving yourself time for the great hall, the Bhool Bhulaiya maze (with a guide) and the Shahi Baoli.
  • Walk across to the Rumi Darwaza and the Chota Imambara, finishing the Husainabad cluster at the Clock Tower and tank.
  • Break for an Awadhi lunch in or near Chowk โ€” this is the place for kebabs and biryani.
  • In the afternoon, visit the British Residency ruins and museum for the 1857 story.
  • End with an evening of ganjing in Hazratganj โ€” shopping for chikankari, dinner, and a stroll.

Two days (the comfortable version). This is the ideal length for the city and takes the rush out of it.

  • Day 1: The Husainabad heritage cluster at an unhurried pace โ€” Bara Imambara and the Bhool Bhulaiya, Rumi Darwaza, Chota Imambara, the Clock Tower and Chattar Manzil, wrapped around a long lunch in Chowk. Spend the late afternoon at the British Residency. Evening in Hazratganj.
  • Day 2: Cross the Gomti to the modern city โ€” the vast Ambedkar Memorial Park in Gomti Nagar, best in the softer light of late afternoon or floodlit after dark. Use the rest of the day for a chikankari deep-dive in the old-city workshops, a look at La Martiniรจre from the outside, and a leisurely Awadhi food crawl through Aminabad. This is also the day to slot in the food you missed โ€” nihari-kulcha at breakfast, a kulfi-falooda in the afternoon.

Three days (add a day trip). Follow the two-day plan and use the third day for one of the excursions in the day-trips section. The standout is Ayodhya (about 135 km), now one of India's most visited pilgrimage cities; alternatively, the Sufi shrine at Dewa Sharif or the Hindu holy town of Naimisharanya make rewarding, quieter half-to-full-day trips. This pace also lets you revisit a favourite food quarter and shop for chikankari without hurrying.

Lucknow in a wider Uttar Pradesh circuit. Lucknow is a natural anchor for a heritage-and-pilgrimage loop across the state. A popular arc runs Lucknow โ†’ Ayodhya โ†’ Varanasi, combining Awadhi culture, the Ram temple town and the sacred ghats of the Ganges, and can be extended west toward Agra via the expressway to join the Golden Triangle. A comfortable version:

  • Lucknow (2 nights) โ€” the imambaras, the Residency, food and chikankari.
  • Ayodhya (1 night) โ€” about 135 km east; the Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi and the Saryu ghats.
  • Varanasi (2 nights) โ€” onward for the Ganga aarti, the ghats and Sarnath.

Five to six days covers this arc at a reasonable pace; a week lets you add Agra to the west.
