Sample itineraries for Mussoorie
Mussoorie's core sights fold comfortably into two days, which is the sweet spot for a weekend from Delhi or Dehradun. The pattern below front-loads the busy, central attractions on the first day and saves the quieter, higher, more atmospheric Landour side for the second. Adjust freely — half the pleasure here is unhurried walking, so build in time to simply sit with a view.
One day (the essentials). Tight but doable if you arrive early.
- Start on The Mall Road and ride the Gun Hill cable car for the town-and-valley panorama before the crowds build.
- Walk Camel's Back Road end to end for the valley views and the old cemetery.
- Drive out to Kempty Falls (about 15 km) mid-morning, ideally before the peak crush, and back.
- Finish at Company Garden or, better, at Sir George Everest's House for sunset over the Doon valley.
Two days (the comfortable version). Adds the Landour side and takes the rush out of it.
- Day 1 — the resort town: The Mall and Gun Hill in the morning; Camel's Back Road; a run out to Kempty Falls and, on the way back, a stop at Mussoorie Lake. Evening on the Mall for the promenade and the lit-up valley.
- Day 2 — the quiet hill: Head up to Landour for a slow morning around Char Dukan and Sisters Bazaar, the churches, and Lal Tibba for the Himalayan view. In the afternoon, visit Sir George Everest's House and walk out toward Cloud's End through the forest. End with the winterline at dusk if the season is right.
Three days. Follow the two-day plan and use the extra day for one of the excursions below — most naturally Dhanaulti with Surkanda Devi, a scenic drive of quiet deodar forest and a hilltop Shakti Peeth, or, for the more active, a Nag Tibba weekend trek. This slower pace also lets you revisit a favourite walk in different light rather than treating everything as a checklist.
Mussoorie as part of a Uttarakhand trip. Because everything funnels through Dehradun, Mussoorie slots easily onto a larger loop. A common shape pairs two nights in Mussoorie with the valley sights of Dehradun (Robber's Cave, Sahastradhara, the Forest Research Institute) and continues to Rishikesh and Haridwar on the Ganga for a contrasting few days of river, yoga and temples — all within a couple of hours of Dehradun. Five to six days covers the combination at a relaxed pace.
