Shimla · How to Reach

Shimla sits in the hills above the Chandigarh plains, and the last stretch to it is always a climb — by winding highway or by the famous mountain railway. There is no fast, flat approach, and that is part of the charm; build the ascent into your plans rather than fighting it.

By train. Shimla's railhead is Shimla station (station code SML), the mountain terminus of the Kalka–Shimla Railway, one of the great narrow-gauge lines of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage property. The line is not on the broad-gauge network, so almost everyone reaches it in two legs: take a mainline train to Kalka (station code KLK) at the foot of the hills, then change onto the toy train for the 96-kilometre climb up to Shimla. The narrow-gauge run takes roughly five to five-and-a-half hours as it threads more than a hundred tunnels, hundreds of bridges and a great many horseshoe curves, gaining well over a kilometre of altitude on the way. Several services run daily — including a faster deluxe train, an ordinary express, and small rail-motor cars — and demand is heavy in season, so book well ahead. This is a journey to savour rather than to rush; if your schedule allows, do at least one leg by train even if you drive the other. By road. For many travellers the road is the quicker option. Shimla is about 112–120 kilometres from Chandigarh, a drive of roughly three-and-a-half to four hours up NH-5 through Pinjore, Kalka, Solan and the pine belt around Shoghi. From Delhi it is around 340–370 kilometres and a full day's drive, usually via Chandigarh; from Manali it is a longer mountain haul. Regular Himachal state and private buses — from ordinary to Volvo air-conditioned coaches — run from Chandigarh and Delhi's ISBT to Shimla's bus stands, and shared and private taxis are plentiful. The mountain section is scenic but full of bends, so travellers prone to motion sickness should come prepared, and winter journeys can be slowed by snow and ice near the top (see the best-time section).

By air. Shimla has its own small airport at Jubbarhatti (Shimla Airport), about 22–23 kilometres from the town, but it is a short hilltop strip with only a limited and highly weather-dependent schedule of small-aircraft flights, so you cannot plan a trip around it. For reliable air travel the practical gateway is Chandigarh Airport (IXC), roughly 120 kilometres away, from where you continue by road (about four hours) or connect to the Kalka toy train. Always confirm current Shimla Airport routes before counting on them, and treat Chandigarh as your default.

Getting around once you arrive. Central Shimla is built for walking. The Mall Road and the Ridge are pedestrian zones where private vehicles are not allowed, so the historic core is explored on foot — bring good shoes for the slopes. A public lift (elevator) connects the lower Cart Road level to the Mall, saving a steep climb with luggage, and local taxis, the tourism department's cabs and app-based cars cover the wider town and the day-trip routes. Because so much of the centre is car-free and vertical, choose accommodation for how far it is and how far uphill from where you want to be, and be ready to hand your bags to a licensed porter for the last stretch to a Mall-area hotel.
