Sample itineraries for Shimla

Shimla flexes to fit the time you have, from a single packed day to a leisurely mountain week. In all cases, front-load a slow walk on the Ridge and Mall — the town's soul is best absorbed on foot — and book the toy train and peak-season hotels well ahead.

One day (the essentials). Tight but rewarding if you're passing through.

  • Start on the Ridge in the morning light, visit Christ Church, then walk the length of Mall Road via Scandal Point and the Gaiety Theatre.
  • Climb (or take the ropeway/taxi) up to Jakhoo Temple for the giant Hanuman statue and the views — watch the monkeys.
  • After lunch on the Mall, browse Lakkar Bazaar and drop into the Kali Bari Temple.
  • If time allows, end with sunset back on the Ridge as the church lights come on.

Two days (the comfortable version). Adds the grander sights and a taste of the surrounding hills.

  • Day 1: The colonial core — Ridge, Christ Church, Mall Road, Scandal Point, Gaiety Theatre, Lakkar Bazaar and Kali Bari — plus Jakhoo Temple. Evening stroll and dinner on the Mall.
  • Day 2: Morning at the Viceregal Lodge and its gardens, followed by the Himachal State Museum. In the afternoon, ride a scenic stretch of the toy train, or take a short trip out to Kufri or a forest walk to Chadwick Falls.

Three days. Follow the two-day plan and use the extra day for a proper day trip into the hills — Naldehra for its pine-fringed golf course and gentle walks, Mashobra for quiet forests, Chail for the palace and the world's highest cricket ground, or Tattapani for the riverside hot springs. This pace lets you slow down, revisit the Ridge in different light, and treat Shimla as a mountain retreat rather than a checklist.

Shimla with a Himachal hill loop. Shimla is the natural first stop on a longer journey up the old Hindustan–Tibet road into apple country and the high Sutlej valley. A classic extension runs:

  • Shimla (2 nights) — the colonial core and nearby hills.
  • Narkanda (1 night), about 65 km on, at around 2,700 m — apple orchards, deodar forest and the short climb to Hatu Peak.
  • Onward to Sarahan for the Bhimakali temple, and deeper into Kinnaur (Sangla, Kalpa) for those with more time and the right permits and season.

A week is comfortable for Shimla plus the near hill loop; add days if you push on into Kinnaur and Spiti, which demand their own careful planning around altitude, roads and season.
