Vaishno Devi

Vaishno Devi is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India, and for most people who make the journey it is not a sightseeing trip at all — it is a vow, a wish, or a promise being kept. The destination is a natural cave shrine high in the Trikuta hills of the lower Himalayas, above the small town of Katra in the Reasi district of Jammu & Kashmir. Inside the sanctum there is no carved idol. The Goddess is worshipped in the form of three natural rock formations, or pindies — representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati — and it is the act of reaching them, on foot up a mountain, that gives the pilgrimage its meaning.

The shrine, known simply as the Bhawan, sits at an altitude of roughly 5,200 feet (about 1,585 metres), and the classic way to reach it is to walk. From the base town of Katra the traditional trek runs about 12 to 13 kilometres, climbing through a well-known sequence of stops — Banganga, Charan Paduka, the halfway sanctuary of Adhkuwari, and the high pass of Sanjichhat — before descending to the cave itself. Millions make this walk every year, and during the two annual Navratri festivals the daily numbers swell enormously. It is a pilgrimage that runs day and night, in a river of people, and the atmosphere — chants of Jai Mata Di echoing along the path, families walking barefoot, the trail lit through the small hours — is unlike anywhere else.

What makes Vaishno Devi approachable for so many is that the whole yatra is managed by a single, well-organised body: the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), established in 1986. The Board runs the registration system, the track, the sanitation, the accommodation, the food, and the various assisted-travel options, which means the mountain is far more accessible than its altitude suggests. Pilgrims who cannot walk the full distance have real choices — battery-operated cars on the paved sections, ponies, hand-carried palki (palanquins), porters, and even a helicopter to the Sanjichhat helipad near the top. Elderly parents, young children and the physically unable all make the darshan every day.

Above the Bhawan, about 2.5 kilometres further and higher up the ridge, stands the Bhairavnath temple, and by long tradition the pilgrimage is considered complete only after visiting it. The legend is woven into the geography: Bhairon Nath is said to have pursued the Goddess up the mountain and been beheaded at the cave, his head flung to the hilltop where his shrine now stands. That final climb — or the short ropeway that now serves it — is the coda to the yatra for those with the time and legs for it.

You do not have to be a pilgrim to find the journey moving. The Trikuta hills are genuinely beautiful, the views back over the Katra valley from Sanjichhat are wide and clean, and the sheer human devotion on display is something to witness in itself. But this is first and foremost a sacred place, walked by people carrying real hopes and griefs, and it rewards travellers who come to it with patience and respect rather than as a box to tick. Give the mountain its due, plan around the crowds, and let the Shrine Board's systems do the heavy lifting.
