Sample itineraries for Vaishno Devi

Vaishno Devi is, at its core, a two-day undertaking for most visitors โ€” a day to travel in and settle in Katra, and a day (or a night) for the yatra itself โ€” but it flexes depending on how you climb and what else you want to see. In every plan, remember that the walk is long and continuously uphill, that registration must come first, and that the shrine operates around the clock, which opens up the option of a cooler night-time climb.

The focused two-day yatra (the classic). The standard shape of a Vaishno Devi trip.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Katra by train, road or a flight into Jammu. Check in, rest, and complete your yatra registration (or confirm your online RFID slip). Eat well and sleep early โ€” or, if you prefer to walk in the cool, use this evening to start the climb.
  • Day 2: Begin the trek early (many start before dawn, or overnight, to reach the Bhawan by morning). Climb via Banganga, Charan Paduka, Adhkuwari and Sanjichhat to the cave; take darshan of the pindies; then visit Bhairavnath above to complete the yatra. Descend by evening โ€” on foot, by battery car, pony or a helicopter leg from Sanjichhat โ€” and rest in Katra before departing.

The comfortable three-day version. Adds a buffer that most people are glad of, given the physical demands.

  • Day 1: Reach Katra, register, and rest.
  • Day 2: Do the yatra at an unhurried pace โ€” walk up, break at Adhkuwari, take darshan and visit Bhairavnath, and stay overnight in Shrine Board accommodation near the Bhawan or Adhkuwari if you want to split the climb.
  • Day 3: Descend at leisure, explore Katra, and depart โ€” or use the extra time for a short local excursion.

The assisted / gentler plan. For elderly pilgrims, families with small children or anyone who can't manage the full walk, the mountain is still very much within reach. Register in Katra, then use the helicopter to Sanjichhat (booked via the Shrine Board) and cover the short remaining distance to the Bhawan by battery car or pony; or take ponies/palki for the whole climb. The ropeway handles the Bhairavnath leg. This turns a strenuous multi-hour trek into a manageable day, though weather can disrupt the helicopter, so keep a fallback in mind.

Vaishno Devi plus the wider region (four to five days). If you have come a long way, it is worth pairing the yatra with the attractions of the Jammu region. A natural extension is to add a day for Shiv Khori, the great cave shrine of Lord Shiva, and/or a night at the hill station of Patnitop, with Jammu city (Raghunath Temple, Bahu Fort) either at the start or end of the trip. See the day-trips section for these. A four-to-five-day plan lets you treat Vaishno Devi as the centrepiece of a fuller Jammu itinerary rather than an in-and-out dash.

Whatever the shape, the two fixed points are the same: sort your registration before anything else, and let the length and gradient of the climb โ€” not just the map distance โ€” set your pace.
