Best time to visit Varanasi

Varanasi has a hot, tropical, monsoon-influenced climate with three clear seasons โ€” a scorching summer, a wet monsoon, and a mild, pleasant winter โ€” and the difference between them is dramatic. The regional climate is recorded by the India Meteorological Department, whose reference weather station sits at Varanasi/Babatpur near the airport. The short answer: come between October and March, and if you can time it for a festival, so much the better.

Winter (roughly November to February) is the ideal window. Days are comfortable and sunny, with daytime highs often in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, while nights and early mornings turn genuinely cold โ€” January lows can dip to around 8โ€“9ยฐC. This is the season of the great festivals and of the celebrated Banarasi winter foods. Do pack warm layers: sunrise boat rides on the river are chilly, and dawn is exactly when you want to be on the water. One caveat โ€” dense fog is common on winter mornings across the Gangetic plains and can disrupt flights and trains and briefly veil the ghats, so build a little schedule slack into December and January travel.

Summer (roughly March to June) is punishing. Temperatures climb steeply from March, and May is typically the hottest month, with highs around 40ยฐC and heat that can push past 45ยฐC in the worst spells. Humidity, dust and glare off the stone ghats make midday sightseeing genuinely difficult and, for some, unsafe. If you must travel in these months, confine activity to early morning and evening, stay hydrated, and rest indoors through the afternoon. Crowds are thinner and rooms cheaper, but the trade-off in comfort is steep.

Monsoon (roughly July to September) brings the rains, with July and August the wettest months โ€” July alone can see on the order of 300 mm of rainfall. The heat eases and the landscape greens, but the Ganga swells substantially, and this is the key practical warning for Varanasi: the river routinely rises to submerge the lower ghats and their steps during and after heavy monsoon. Boat operations can be suspended or restricted for safety, the riverside walkways along the ghats may be partly underwater, and the evening aarti is sometimes shifted to higher ground. Lanes can flood and turn slippery. The city remains open and atmospheric under monsoon skies, but if the ghats and the boat ride are central to your plans, the monsoon is the season to avoid or to approach with flexible expectations.

Festivals to plan around. The most spectacular is Dev Deepawali, the "Diwali of the gods," when the entire sweep of ghats is lit with hundreds of thousands of oil lamps. It falls on Kartik Purnima, the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik (November); in 2025 it fell on 5 November, and the exact date shifts each year with the lunar calendar, so verify before booking. Mahashivratri (usually February or March), sacred to Shiva, is enormous in this city of Shiva and fills the temples and streets. Ganga Mahotsav, a multi-day cultural festival of music and dance organised by Uttar Pradesh Tourism, is typically held in the run-up to Dev Deepawali in November. These dates draw huge crowds and rooms sell out well ahead โ€” a reason to book early, and to double-check dates against official temple and tourism sources.
