Sample itineraries for Varanasi
Varanasi rewards slow travel, but its essential experiences can be covered in one full day, and comfortably in two. Below are suggested frameworks โ adjust timings to the season, and always verify aarti and temple hours locally.
One day (the essence of Kashi).
- Pre-dawn: Rise early and head to the riverfront for a sunrise boat ride, ideally starting from Dashashwamedh or Assi. Watch the ghats emerge in the mist and the first bathers enter the river.
- Morning: Disembark and walk a stretch of the ghats. If you're at Assi, catch part of the Subah-e-Banaras programme. Stop for a classic Banarasi breakfast of kachori-sabzi and jalebi in the lanes.
- Late morning: Make your way through the galis to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the Vishwanath Dham corridor for darshan (expect queues and security checks; leave bags and cameras behind).
- Afternoon: Rest through the heat, then explore the old-city lanes โ silk shops, sweet stalls, small shrines.
- Evening: Reach Dashashwamedh Ghat early to secure a spot (or hire a boat) for the Ganga Aarti at sunset. End with dinner in the old city.
Two days (a fuller picture).
- Day 1: Follow the one-day plan above โ sunrise boat, ghat walk and breakfast, Kashi Vishwanath, and the evening Ganga Aarti.
- Day 2, morning: Take a half-day trip to Sarnath (about 10 km) โ the Dhamek Stupa, the monastery ruins and the archaeological museum with the Ashoka Lion Capital. Return by early afternoon.
- Day 2, afternoon: Cross the river to Ramnagar Fort, or visit BHU and the New Vishwanath Temple and the temples around Durga Kund (Durga Temple, Tulsi Manas, Sankat Mochan).
- Day 2, evening: A second, unhurried evening on a quieter ghat such as Assi, or a repeat of the aarti from a boat.
Three days or more. With extra time, add a slow morning devoted entirely to walking the full length of the ghats; a visit to the silk-weaving quarters; the museums at BHU (Bharat Kala Bhavan) and Ramnagar; and simply more unstructured time in the lanes. Varanasi is a city that reveals itself to those who linger.
Pairing Varanasi with nearby pilgrimage circuits. Kashi sits at the centre of one of India's richest spiritual regions and combines naturally with:
- Bodh Gaya (in Bihar, roughly 250 km away, a longer journey best done by train or car with an overnight) โ where the Buddha attained enlightenment, completing the Sarnath connection.
- Prayagraj / Allahabad (about 120 km) โ the Triveni Sangam, confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati, and site of the Kumbh Mela.
- Ayodhya (a few hours by road or rail) โ the birthplace of Rama and now a major pilgrimage destination. A classic loop strings together Varanasi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya over four to six days; a Buddhist circuit links Sarnath with Bodh Gaya.
