The short answer is October to March, with the cool, dry months from around November to February the pick of the year. Diu has a tropical, sea-moderated climate, and its island position takes some of the sting out of the Gujarat heat — but it also brings humidity and a defined monsoon, so timing still matters. The figures below follow climate normals of the kind compiled by the India Meteorological Department; treat them as typical averages rather than a forecast for your specific dates.

Summer (April–June) is hot and increasingly humid as the season builds toward the rains. Inland Saurashtra bakes in these months, and while Diu is tempered by constant sea breezes — one of the real advantages of an island — daytime temperatures still climb into the mid-30s Celsius, and the record highs on the island have reached the low 40s. May is the peak of the heat. The sea stays swimmable and the breeze helps, but midday sightseeing at exposed sites like the fort is draining, so shift activity to early morning and late afternoon and stay hydrated.

Monsoon (July–September) brings almost all of Diu's rain. The island's annual rainfall of roughly 850 millimetres falls overwhelmingly in these months, with July the wettest by a wide margin. The landscape greens up and the light can be dramatic, but expect heavy downpours, high humidity, rough seas and suspended water sports. It is an atmospheric, low-crowd time for travellers who don't mind the wet and who come for the forts and the mood rather than the beach, but it is not the classic Diu experience.

Winter (October–March) is the season to aim for. From October the humidity eases and the days settle into warm, bright, comfortable weather; by the heart of winter, November through February, conditions are close to ideal — pleasant sunny days, cool and even chilly nights, calm seas and clean water. January is the coolest month, when nights can turn genuinely cold by coastal standards, so pack a light layer for early mornings and evenings. This is the window when the beaches, the water sports and the sunset points are all at their best, and it is unsurprisingly the busiest and most festive stretch of the year.

For water sports specifically, the operators generally run from around October to May, when the sea is calmest and the water clearest; activities pause through the monsoon. If parasailing, jet-skiing or a boat ride to Panikotha is high on your list, plan for the dry season and, ideally, the earlier or later hours of the day rather than the harsh midday.

When not to go: the depth of the monsoon (July–August) if beaches and water sports are your priority, and the peak of summer (May) for the heat, unless you specifically want the quiet and the low prices. Everything in the October–March cool season is fair game, with the added draw that Diu's festive calendar and the regional tourist "season" both peak in these months.
