Sample itineraries for Diu
Diu is compact, so a little goes a long way. Below are three ways to shape a visit, from a single full day to a longer trip that folds Diu into a Saurashtra circuit. Because the island rewards a slow pace, none of these needs rushing — the aim is to alternate forts and history with beach and sea, and to leave the west end free for sunset.
One day (the essentials). Doable if Diu is a stopover, though it leaves little slack.
- Start early at Diu Fort while it is cool, then walk into the old town for St Paul's Church, the Diu Museum (St Thomas Church) and the Zampa Gateway.
- Ride out to the Naida Caves just outside the walls, then continue to the Gangeshwar Temple for the sea-cave Shivalingas — time it near a rising tide if you can.
- Spend the afternoon at Nagoa Beach for a swim and, if you fancy, some water sports.
- Close the day at Chakratirth or another western sunset point as the sun drops into the sea, before a seafood dinner and a cold drink in town.
Two days (the comfortable version). The natural length for Diu, and enough to see everything without hurrying.
- Day 1: The town and its history — Diu Fort, St Paul's Church, St Thomas Church/Museum, a stroll through the Portuguese quarter and the Zampa Gateway, then the INS Khukri Memorial in the late afternoon for its sea views, finishing at a sunset point.
- Day 2: The island's edges — the Naida Caves and Gangeshwar Temple in the morning, a boat trip out to Panikotha if the sea allows, then a long, unhurried afternoon split between Nagoa and Ghoghla beaches, with water sports for the energetic and a quiet swim for everyone else.
Diu on a Saurashtra circuit. Diu is at its best as the restful coastal finale of a wider southern-Gujarat loop, and this is how many travellers experience it. A classic version runs:
- Somnath (1 night) — the great seaside Jyotirlinga temple and its evening aarti, about 90 km from Diu.
- Gir / Sasan Gir (1–2 nights) — the only wild home of the Asiatic lion, roughly 110 km away, for morning and afternoon safaris (subject to permits and the park's seasonal closure).
- Diu (2 nights) — forts, beaches, sea-cave shrine and sunsets to wind down, with a cold beer that Gujarat's dry mainland cannot offer.
Five to six days is comfortable for this loop by hired car; even a compressed version that pairs Somnath and Gir with a couple of nights in Diu gives a satisfying arc from pilgrimage to wildlife to the sea.
