How to reach Diu
Diu's island geography is the first thing to plan around: there is no railway on the island itself, and its small airport has only a thin schedule, so most travellers arrive by road across the bridge from mainland Gujarat. It is more remote than its popularity suggests, and getting here is part of the commitment — but the approaches are straightforward once you understand them.
By train. This is the point most first-time visitors get wrong: there is no railway station on Diu island. The nearest railhead is the small station at Delwada, roughly 8 kilometres away on the mainland, from where you continue by auto-rickshaw or local bus across the bridge into Diu. Delwada, however, is a minor station with limited services. The more useful mainline junction is Veraval, about 90 kilometres to the west, which has direct trains to Ahmedabad and other Gujarat cities and is also the gateway to Somnath; from Veraval you cover the last stretch to Diu by bus or hired car. Some travellers also route via Una, the nearest sizeable town, a short hop from Delwada. By road. For most people this is the practical way in. Diu island connects to the Gujarat mainland by a bridge at Ghoghla, and the town sits at the end of a coastal road network reaching down through Una. State-run and private buses link Diu with Ahmedabad (a long haul of roughly 10 hours), as well as with Somnath, Veraval, Junagadh, Rajkot and, over a much longer overnight run, Mumbai. Self-drive and private taxis use the same corridors — Una, Rajula and Mahuva are the main mainland approach towns. If you are already touring Saurashtra, Diu slots naturally onto the end of a Somnath–Gir loop by car, which is the most comfortable way to arrive.
By air. Diu has its own airport — Diu Airport (DIU) — a small civil-enclave field a few kilometres from the town, which is a genuine convenience when the schedule suits you. Its route map is limited and changeable, but it has carried flights connecting Diu with Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Surat on regional carriers. Because the roster of flights and airlines is small and revised from time to time, confirm current DIU routes and frequencies before you plan around them; if nothing fits, the fallback is to fly into a larger Gujarat airport and continue by road. When flights do line up, the airport's closeness to town makes arrival painless.
Getting around once you arrive. Diu is small, flat and made for two wheels — the single most popular way to get around is a rented scooter or motorcycle, which lets you reach the far beaches, the caves and the sea-cave temple at your own pace and is the local default. Auto-rickshaws are plentiful for shorter hops and for those who would rather not ride; agree the fare before setting off. Bicycles are available for hire too, and the town centre and fort are best explored on foot. There is no need for anything larger — the whole island is comfortably covered in a day of gentle riding, and distances between sights are measured in single-digit kilometres.
