Best time to visit Hyderabad
The clear answer is October to February, and the reason is the plateau heat. Hyderabad has a hot, dry climate for much of the year, tempered a little by its elevation on the Deccan, and the difference between the cool season and the hot one is the difference between comfortable sightseeing and a genuine ordeal. The figures below follow climate normals of the kind compiled by the India Meteorological Department; treat them as typical averages, not a forecast for your specific dates.
Summer (March–June) is the season to avoid if you have a choice. Heat builds steadily from March and peaks before the monsoon, with May the hottest month — average daytime highs sit around the high 30s Celsius, and on the worst days temperatures can push toward or past 45°C. The open forecourts of Golconda, the exposed climb to its summit, and the treeless plaza around the Charminar all become punishing in the middle of the day. If you must travel in these months, sightsee at first light, carry water, wear a hat, and retreat indoors — a museum, a long lunch — through the fiercest afternoon hours.
Monsoon (roughly late June–September/October) brings the rains that break the heat, with the wettest weeks usually falling in July and August. The city receives most of its annual rainfall in this window, and the showers green the parks, fill the lakes and cool the air. The rain tends to come in bursts rather than all-day downpours, so it is a workable shoulder season for travellers who don't mind carrying an umbrella and appreciate thinner crowds and a fresher city — just allow for the odd washed-out afternoon and heavier humidity.
Winter (October–February) is the ideal window, and October to February is peak tourist season for good reason. From October the heat and the rains both ease, and November through January deliver the most comfortable conditions of the year — pleasant, sunny days generally in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, cooler evenings, and clear light that flatters the monuments and the lake. December and January are the coolest months, with nights that can turn genuinely chilly, so pack a light layer for early starts and evening lake walks. By late February the temperatures begin their climb back toward summer.
Because winter is the popular season, expect the trade-offs of any peak period: longer queues at the headline sights, larger weekend crowds at places like Golconda and Ramoji Film City, and accommodation booking up sooner, so reserve ahead if your dates fall over a holiday. When not to go, if you have flexibility, is the peak of summer in May and early June, purely for the heat.
A further reason to consider late September through October is that it brackets Telangana's two signature festivals — Bonalu (in the monsoon months, July/August) and Bathukamma (October, just before Dussehra) — which fill the city and the state with colour and ritual. If cultural timing matters to you, check the current year's festival dates against your travel window, as both follow the Hindu lunar calendar and shift each year (see the culture section).
