Hyderabad is one of southern India's great transport hubs, well connected by air, rail and road to every corner of the country, so getting here is rarely the hard part. As a major metro and IT centre it sees heavy traffic in all three modes, which means plenty of options whatever your budget or direction of travel.

By air. The city's gateway is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (airport code HYD) at Shamshabad, roughly 24 kilometres south of the centre. It is a large, modern airport with extensive domestic connections to every major Indian city and a growing roster of international routes across the Gulf, Southeast Asia and beyond, so for most out-of-state and overseas visitors this is the obvious way in. From the airport, the fastest link into town is the access-controlled Outer Ring Road and the elevated expressway; airport taxis, app cabs and dedicated Pushpak airport buses (run by the state transport corporation) all serve the run into the city and to Secunderabad, though the transfer can take an hour or more in traffic. Confirm current routes and timings before you plan around them.

By train. Hyderabad is a major railway junction with three principal stations, and knowing which one your train uses saves confusion. Secunderabad Junction (station code SC) is the largest and busiest, handling long-distance trains in every direction; it is the city's main railhead and the code to search first. Hyderabad Deccan, better known as Nampally (HYB), sits close to the Old City and the Charminar area and is convenient for sightseeing-focused stays. Kacheguda (KCG) is the third major terminal. Fast, premium services including Rajdhani, Vande Bharat, Duronto and Shatabdi-class trains connect the city to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and beyond. By road. Hyderabad sits at the meeting point of several national highways radiating across the Deccan, and is ringed by the Outer Ring Road (ORR), a 158-kilometre access-controlled expressway that makes crossing the sprawling metro far quicker than the surface roads. Long-distance and luxury inter-city buses — run both by the state transport corporation and by private operators — connect Hyderabad with Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Vijayawada, Warangal and dozens of smaller centres, and are a comfortable overnight option on the busier corridors. Self-drive and hired-car journeys use the same highway network.

Getting around once you arrive. Within the city, the Hyderabad Metro is the most stress-free way to cover longer distances: its elevated lines link key districts, and it neatly bypasses the notorious traffic, though it does not reach every monument. Beyond the Metro, app-based cabs, metered and shared auto-rickshaws, and the suburban MMTS train network fill the gaps, while the state transport corporation runs an extensive city bus system. The Old City around the Charminar is best explored on foot once you are in it — the lanes are narrow, and near the Charminar itself cars and auto-rickshaws are restricted, so the last stretch is a pedestrian one. Traffic across the city can be heavy, so build generous buffers between sights that sit on opposite sides of the lake.
