Sample itineraries for Hyderabad
Hyderabad flexes to fit the time you have. Below are three ways to structure a visit, from a focused single day to a relaxed three. In all cases, tackle the Old City in the cooler morning hours, and note that several key sights โ the Qutb Shahi Tombs, Chowmahalla Palace and the Salar Jung Museum โ are closed on Fridays, so anchor your plan around that if your dates include one.
One day (the essentials). Tight but doable if you start early and keep the two halves of the city separate.
- Begin at the Charminar at opening time, while the light is soft and the bazaar is stirring. Give it an hour, then walk to the neighbouring Mecca Masjid and browse Laad Bazaar.
- Mid-morning, head west to Golconda Fort for the climb and the views (allow two hours), and if it fits, the nearby Qutb Shahi Tombs.
- Lunch on a proper Hyderabadi biryani.
- Afternoon at the Salar Jung Museum, then finish with a sunset stroll on Tank Bund beside Hussain Sagar and a boat out to the Buddha statue.
Two days (the comfortable version). Takes the rush out of the one-day plan and adds the Nizams' world.
- Day 1 โ Old City: Charminar, Mecca Masjid and Laad Bazaar in the morning; Chowmahalla Palace before lunch; the Salar Jung Museum in the afternoon; evening on Tank Bund and the lake.
- Day 2 โ Golconda and the west: Golconda Fort in the cool of the morning, then the Qutb Shahi Tombs next door; afternoon at Birla Mandir for the view, or a look around the modern HITEC City side of town; return to Golconda for the evening sound-and-light show if your energy holds.
Three days. Follow the two-day plan and use the third day for a day trip โ the obvious choice is Ramoji Film City on the eastern outskirts, an all-day outing for families and film fans, or a run out to Nagarjuna Sagar or the Kakatiya monuments around Warangal (see the day-trips section). Alternatively, use the extra day to slow everything down: revisit the Old City bazaars, linger over an Irani chai, take a second, closer look at the Salar Jung galleries, and eat your way through the city's food landmarks at leisure.
Whichever length you choose, try to line up at least one evening ritual โ the sound-and-light show at Golconda, a lakeside sunset at Tank Bund, or dusk at Birla Mandir โ and give the Old City a full uninterrupted morning rather than a rushed hour.
