Jim Corbett

Jim Corbett National Park is where Indian wildlife tourism effectively began. Established in 1936 in the Ramganga valley of what is now Uttarakhand, it is the oldest national park in the country, and for close to a century it has been the yardstick against which India's tiger reserves are measured. If you have ever wanted to sit in an open jeep at dawn, engine off, watching a sal forest slowly reveal its inhabitants — an elephant herd fanning across a grassland, a crocodile hauled out on a river sandbar, and, if the day is generous, the striped shape most people come hoping to see — this is the classic place to do it.

The park sits in the Kumaon foothills where the Himalaya begin to fold up out of the plains, spread across a landscape of forested ridges, river terraces, tall elephant grass and the wide braided channel of the Ramganga river. That variety of terrain is the reason for its extraordinary richness. Corbett protects Bengal tigers and one of northern India's largest wild elephant populations, alongside leopards, sloth bears, several kinds of deer, gharial and mugger crocodiles in the rivers, otters, and a bird list that runs to well over 500 species — one of the highest counts of any protected area in the country. It is as celebrated among birdwatchers as it is among tiger-seekers.

Its history is inseparable from the man it is named after. Jim Corbett (1875–1955) was a Nainital-born hunter who tracked and killed man-eating tigers and leopards across Kumaon in the early twentieth century, then turned decisively toward conservation and photography, and lobbied for the reserve that would eventually carry his name. First called Hailey National Park, it was renamed in the mid-1950s in his honour around the time of his death. In 1973 it earned a second landmark distinction: it became the first reserve brought under Project Tiger, independent India's flagship tiger-conservation programme, which was inaugurated here. To walk into Corbett is to walk into the founding chapter of Indian conservation.

Practically, the park is organised into a handful of safari zones, each entered through its own gate and each with its own character — Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Durga Devi and the buffer forest of Sitabani are the names you will plan around. The core zones close during the monsoon, while a couple of buffer zones stay open all year, so which zone you can visit depends heavily on the season (the best-time and things-to-do sections below explain this in detail). The base town for all of it is Ramnagar, a busy railhead about six hours from Delhi, from where the various gates radiate out.

Corbett rewards a certain patience. This is not a zoo, and no one — no guide, no lodge, no website — can promise you a tiger. What it offers instead is a genuine wilderness on a grand scale, close enough to Delhi for a long weekend yet wild enough to feel remote, and the quiet thrill of never quite knowing what the next bend in the forest track will bring. Come for two or three days, book more than one safari to improve your odds, and let the forest set the pace.
