The clear answer is October to March, and — as with most of Rajasthan — the reason is heat. Jodhpur has a hot, arid climate on the edge of the Thar Desert, with a short monsoon and a long, punishing summer, and the season you choose makes the difference between comfortable sightseeing and a genuine ordeal. The figures below follow the pattern of climate normals compiled by the India Meteorological Department; treat them as typical averages, not a forecast for your specific dates.

Summer (April–June) is fierce and best avoided. Heat builds sharply from March, and by May, the hottest month, daytime highs commonly sit around 42°C and can climb higher still in the worst spells, with hot desert winds and glaring, shadeless light. The fort's open ramparts and the treeless lanes of the old city offer little respite, and mid-day sightseeing becomes draining and, at the extremes, dangerous. If you must travel in these months, keep to early morning and late evening, carry plenty of water, and rest indoors through the afternoon.

Monsoon (July–September) brings the year's rain, though Jodhpur is a dry city — it receives only a modest annual total, the great bulk of it concentrated in these months. The rains knock the edge off the heat and briefly green the desert, and the fort looks dramatic under monsoon cloud, but humidity rises and the occasional heavy downpour can interrupt plans. It is a workable low-season window for travellers who don't mind the mugginess and want thinner crowds and lower room rates.

Winter (October–March) is the ideal window and the reason this is peak tourist season. From October the heat breaks, and November through February deliver the most pleasant conditions of the year — warm, sunny, dry days generally in the mid-20s Celsius, and cool, comfortable evenings. December and January are the coolest months, and desert nights in this stretch can drop to single digits, so pack a warm layer for early mornings on the ramparts and for open-jeep desert excursions. The light in these months is clear and golden — perfect for photographing the blue city from above.

There is no fog problem here to compare with the Delhi–Agra corridor, so winter transport is generally reliable. The only real trade-off in the cool season is crowds and price: the fort, the lassi stalls and the rooftop cafés are busiest from roughly late October through February, and this is also when room rates peak. Booking ahead in this window is wise, especially around the October festival dates.

Two festivals give you a reason to time a visit for October. The Marwar Festival, organised by Rajasthan Tourism around the full moon of Sharad Purnima, is a two-day celebration of Marwari folk music and dance staged at atmospheric venues around the city (confirm the exact dates and programme with Rajasthan Tourism, as they shift with the lunar calendar each year). Overlapping the same full-moon window is the internationally known Jodhpur RIFF folk-music festival at Mehrangarh Fort (see the culture section). If your dates align with either, the city is at its liveliest — just book accommodation well in advance.
