Jodhpur's core sights cluster close together, so even a single day covers the highlights and two days does the city real justice. Below are three ways to structure a visit, from a focused single day to a wider Marwar and desert circuit. In all cases, give Mehrangarh Fort the time it deserves — a full morning at least — and try to see the ramparts and the blue city in the golden light of early morning or late afternoon.

One day (the essentials). Tight but very doable, since the marquee sights are all within a few kilometres.

• Start early at Mehrangarh Fort, ideally soon after opening, while the light is soft and the crowds are thin. Give it three hours, take the audio guide, and don't rush the ramparts.
• On the way down, stop at Jaswant Thada, a short distance away, for the marble cenotaph and the view back to the fort.
• Head into the old city for lunch, then explore the Clock Tower and Sardar Market and walk out to Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell.
• Late afternoon, drive up to Umaid Bhawan Palace for the museum and grounds, or out to Kaylana Lake for sunset over the water.

Two days (the comfortable version). Adds the sights a one-day rush skips and leaves room to get properly lost in the blue lanes.

• Day 1: Mehrangarh Fort in the morning, then Jaswant Thada. Lunch in the old city, an unhurried afternoon in Sardar Market and around the Clock Tower, and Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell. End with a rooftop dinner overlooking the floodlit fort.
• Day 2: A morning walk through the Blue City and the Brahmpuri lanes, or a stroll in the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park below the fort. In the afternoon, visit Umaid Bhawan Palace and drive out to Mandore Gardens, finishing at Kaylana Lake for sunset. Evening free for the bazaars and a Marwari thali.

With more time — the Marwar and desert circuit. With a third day, add a day trip: the temple town of Osian with a desert camel safari, a cultural Bishnoi village excursion, or the fort at Nagaur (see the day-trips section). This slower pace lets you treat Jodhpur as a base rather than a checklist, and to revisit the fort in different light.

Jodhpur in a Rajasthan trip. Jodhpur is a natural hinge in a wider tour of the state. Common routings pair it with Jaisalmer (about 285 km west) for the full desert experience, with Udaipur (about 250 km south) for lakes and palaces, or fold it into a larger loop with Jaipur and the Golden Triangle to the east. Two nights here is the comfortable minimum within such a circuit; three lets you add a desert day trip without feeling rushed.
