Jodhpur · How to Reach

Jodhpur is the transport hub of western Rajasthan, and reaching it is straightforward from Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai, as well as from the other tourist cities of the state. It has its own airport, a major railway junction, and good road links, so you can choose your arrival to suit your route through the region.

By train. The main station is Jodhpur Junction (station code JU), right at the edge of the old city and only a short auto ride from the Clock Tower and most sightseeing. It is a large junction with services fanning out across Rajasthan and beyond — to Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and more. From Delhi the journey is roughly 600 kilometres and is most commonly done as a comfortable overnight train, with several express and superfast services on the route; there are also faster daytime options, and the network is continually upgraded, so check current trains directly. Jodhpur has a couple of secondary stations (Bhagat Ki Kothi and Raika Bagh), but for almost all travellers JU is the one to book. By air. Jodhpur Airport (JDH) sits at Ratanada, roughly five kilometres south of the city centre — an easy 15-minute drive in. It is a civil enclave attached to an Indian Air Force base, which means the terminal is modest and the flight roster is limited and changeable, but it does carry regular scheduled services to and from major hubs, most reliably Delhi and Mumbai, and seasonally to other cities. Flying from Delhi takes a little over an hour versus a full overnight on the train, which makes air a sensible choice if time is tight. As routes and frequencies here shift with the season, confirm current flights before you plan around them.

By road. Jodhpur is well connected by national highways, and hiring a car with driver is the most flexible way to reach it as part of a wider Rajasthan loop. As rough guides, it is around 250 kilometres from Udaipur, 335 kilometres from Jaipur, 285 kilometres from Jaisalmer, 450 kilometres from Ahmedabad, and roughly 600–620 kilometres from Delhi. Government (RSRTC) and private operators run buses on all these corridors, including overnight Volvo sleeper coaches from Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur and Ahmedabad. Road conditions are generally good, but desert-highway driving after dark carries the usual risks, so favour daytime road transfers where you can.

Getting around once you arrive. Within the city, auto-rickshaws, battery e-rickshaws, app-based cabs and taxis cover everything, and distances are short — the fort, Jaswant Thada, the Clock Tower and Umaid Bhawan are all within a few kilometres of each other. Agree an auto fare before you set off or use a metered app to avoid haggling. The old blue city is best explored on foot: its lanes are narrow, steep in places, and often too tight for vehicles, and getting lost in them is part of the pleasure. For the more spread-out sights — Mandore, Kaylana Lake, the Bishnoi villages — a half-day hired taxi is the simplest option.
