Sample itineraries for Khajuraho

Khajuraho is compact, so even a short visit covers a great deal. Below are three ways to structure your time, from a single focused day to a wider central-India loop. In all cases, anchor your visit on the Western Group โ€” ideally early, in the soft morning light โ€” and save the outlying groups and the Sound and Light show for later in the day. Unlike some monuments, the Western Group is generally open every day (it is the ASI Museum that closes on Fridays), which gives you scheduling freedom.

One day (the essentials). Very doable given how close everything is, and the standard shape of a temple-focused visit.

  • Start early at the Western Group โ€” Kandariya Mahadev, Lakshmana, Vishwanath, Chitragupta, Devi Jagadambi and the Varaha shrine โ€” giving yourself two to three unhurried hours and, if possible, a licensed guide. Look in on the living Matangeshwara temple just outside the enclosure.
  • Mid-morning, visit the Archaeological Museum nearby to see recovered sculpture up close.
  • After lunch, take an auto or cycle-rickshaw to the Eastern (Jain) Group for the Parsvanath and Adinath temples, then loop out to the Southern Group (Duladeo and Chaturbhuj) if time allows.
  • In the evening, settle in for the Sound and Light show at the Western Group to round off the day.

Two days (the comfortable version). Takes the rush out of it and leaves room for the surroundings.

  • Day 1: The Western Group at a slow pace in the morning, the Archaeological Museum, and the Sound and Light show in the evening. Use the afternoon for the Chausath Yogini temple and an easy wander or cycle around the town.
  • Day 2: The Eastern (Jain) and Southern groups in the cool of the morning, followed by a half-day excursion โ€” most rewardingly a Panna Tiger Reserve safari (in season) or the Raneh Falls canyon, both an easy drive away. This pairing of world-class art with wild central-India landscape is what makes an overnight stay worthwhile.

Longer / as part of a central-India circuit. Khajuraho slots naturally into several wider routes, and two nights here can be the cultural core of a week's travel:

  • With wildlife: pair Khajuraho with Panna National Park (about 45 km) for tiger safaris and the Ken river, an easy and popular two-centre trip.
  • With Bundelkhand heritage: combine with Orchha (near Jhansi, about 170 km), whose riverside palaces and cenotaphs make a superb complement, often approached by the same Jhansi railhead.
  • On a longer arc: many travellers link Khajuraho with Varanasi to the east or Agra and the Golden Triangle to the northwest, using it as the central-India highlight between the better-known northern circuits.

Five to seven days is comfortable for any of these combinations; Khajuraho itself needs one full day at minimum and two to do it justice.
