Kovalam

Kovalam is where India's deep south meets the Arabian Sea in a run of three curving, coconut-fringed beaches, and it is the reason Kerala first appeared on the international beach map. The name means "grove of coconut trees" in Malayalam, and that is exactly what you get: a shallow arc of headlands and coves backed by palms, with fishing catamarans drawn up on the sand and a red-and-white striped lighthouse standing sentinel over the whole scene. Sitting roughly 16 kilometres south of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's capital, it has been a favourite of European travellers since the 1930s and a fixture of the backpacker trail since the 1970s, yet it still runs on the rhythm of the tide and the daily catch.

The heart of Kovalam is a bay divided into three adjoining crescents — Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach and Samudra Beach — separated by rocky promontories that you can clamber over at low tide. Lighthouse Beach, the southernmost and busiest, is the postcard image of Kovalam, its promenade lined with shacks, shops and Ayurveda centres beneath the candy-striped tower on Kurumkal hillock. Beyond the beaches, the appeal broadens quickly: the old fishing harbour and rock-cut heritage of Vizhinjam a short way south, the golden estuary of Poovar, the wooded hill road up to Ponmudi, and the temples, museums and palaces of Thiruvananthapuram all sit within an easy day's reach.

What sets Kovalam apart from India's other beach destinations is its second identity as a wellness capital. Kerala is the home of Ayurveda, and Kovalam has become one of the country's most concentrated clusters of Ayurvedic treatment centres, yoga shalas and rejuvenation retreats. Travellers come here not only to swim and sunbathe but to sign up for week-long Panchakarma programmes, daily massage, or the monsoon-season rejuvenation therapies that Kerala is famous for. It is entirely normal to spend a morning surfing and an afternoon on a treatment table under a therapist's hands.

Kovalam is compact and walkable in a way that big-ticket destinations rarely are. You can stroll the entire seafront promenade in half an hour, watch the fishermen haul in their nets at dawn, climb the lighthouse for a panorama of the coast, and be back for a plate of grilled seafood by the water — all in a single relaxed day. It rewards slowness rather than a checklist. Many visitors arrive planning two nights and stay longer, seduced by the easy pace, the sunsets over the sea, and the sense that there is always one more cove to explore.

Practically, it is one of the most accessible beaches in South India. Thiruvananthapuram has its own international airport and a major railway junction, both within about half an hour of the sand, so Kovalam works as a self-contained short break, as a restful bookend to a longer Kerala tour of backwaters and hill stations, or as a base for exploring the temple-town heritage of the state capital. However you come to it, give the sea its due, respect the lifeguard flags, and leave time for at least one slow sunset from the lighthouse end of the bay.
