How to reach Kovalam
Kovalam is unusually easy to reach for a beach destination, because it sits in the backyard of a state capital that has both an international airport and a major railway station. Almost everyone arrives via Thiruvananthapuram, roughly 16 kilometres to the north, and completes the last leg by road in half an hour or so.
By air. The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport (TRV), officially Thiruvananthapuram International, about 15โ20 kilometres from Kovalam and typically a 30-to-45-minute drive depending on city traffic. It is one of the oldest airports in India and handles a solid roster of domestic flights to the major metros plus international connections to the Gulf, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia โ a legacy of Kerala's large expatriate workforce. Prepaid taxis and app cabs are available at the terminal; agree the fare or use a metered app before setting off. Because international and domestic routes change with the season, confirm current flights before planning around a specific connection.
By train. The main railhead is Thiruvananthapuram Central (station code TVC), the busy terminus in the heart of the city, well connected by express and superfast trains up the Kerala coast to Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and beyond, and by long-distance services to Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi and the rest of the country. It is roughly 12โ16 kilometres from Kovalam. A handful of trains also use the smaller Thiruvananthapuram Pettah and Nemom stations, but for most travellers TVC is the one to book. From the station, auto-rickshaws and taxis run to Kovalam in about 30โ40 minutes. Because live timetables and seat availability change constantly, check current trains and fares in the search box on this page rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
By road. Kovalam is linked to Thiruvananthapuram by a good coastal road, and the city itself sits on National Highway 66, the arterial route running the length of Kerala's coast. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses and private buses run frequently between the city and Kovalam, making it one of the cheapest ways to arrive. Long-distance buses from Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi and across the Tamil Nadu border at Kanyakumari and Nagercoil all terminate in Thiruvananthapuram, from where you transfer. Self-drive and hired cars are straightforward; the roads are narrow and winding in places, so allow more time than the distance suggests.
Getting around once you arrive. Kovalam is small enough to explore mostly on foot โ the promenade linking Lighthouse, Hawa and Samudra beaches is walkable end to end, though it involves steps and the odd rocky scramble between coves. For anything further afield, auto-rickshaws are the workhorse; fix the fare before you get in, as meters are often "not working" for tourists. App-based cabs reach Kovalam but can be scarce for the return leg, so it is worth asking your driver to wait or arranging a pickup time. For day trips to Poovar, Vizhinjam, Ponmudi or Padmanabhapuram, hiring a car with a driver for the day is by far the simplest option and lets you combine two or three nearby stops. Two-wheeler and bicycle rentals are also available locally for the more independent-minded.
