Sample itineraries for Kovalam
Kovalam is a place to unwind rather than tick off sights, so these itineraries are deliberately unhurried. The two-day plan is the natural fit for the destination; the extensions show how to fold in the wider region.
One day (the essentials). Enough to get the feel of Kovalam if you are passing through.
- Start at sunrise on Hawa Beach, watching the fishermen bring in the shore-seine net, then take an early yoga class or a beach walk while it is cool.
- Mid-morning, settle on Lighthouse Beach for a swim (heed the flags) and a wander along the promenade.
- After lunch by the sea, book an Ayurvedic massage to sit out the hottest part of the day.
- Late afternoon, climb the Vizhinjam lighthouse for the view, then find a spot on Lighthouse Beach for sunset and a grilled-seafood dinner.
Two days (the comfortable version). The ideal length, and enough to add the immediate surroundings.
- Day 1: Ease into Kovalam โ sunrise on the beach, a swim, the lighthouse climb, and an afternoon Ayurveda session. Spend the evening on the Lighthouse Beach promenade.
- Day 2: In the morning, head south to Vizhinjam for the fishing harbour, the marine aquarium and the rock-cut cave temple, then continue to Poovar (about 12 km) for a backwater and estuary boat ride where the river meets the sea. Return to Kovalam for a final sunset and a catamaran ride if the sea is calm.
Three days. Follow the two-day plan and use the third day for a trip into Thiruvananthapuram โ the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, the Napier Museum and zoo compound, and the Kanakakunnu Palace grounds โ or for a cooler day in the hills at Ponmudi. This pace lets Kovalam stay restful while you sample the region's variety.
Kovalam as part of a Kerala tour. Many travellers slot Kovalam into a longer south-Kerala loop as the coastal, restful bookend:
- Kovalam / Thiruvananthapuram (2 nights) โ beaches, Ayurveda and the capital's temples and museums.
- Varkala (1โ2 nights) โ the dramatic cliff beach about an hour and a half north, for a change of coastal scenery.
- Alappuzha / Kumarakom (1โ2 nights) โ the Kerala backwaters and a houseboat night.
- Onward to Munnar or Thekkady for tea gardens and wildlife, if the hills are on your list.
Roughly a week is comfortable for a south-Kerala circuit that treats Kovalam as its opening or closing chapter.
