Udaipur · Best Time to Visit

Udaipur has a subtropical, semi-arid climate with three broad seasons — a hot summer, a monsoon, and a long, pleasant cool-dry stretch — and the difference between them is dramatic enough that timing genuinely shapes your trip. According to India Meteorological Department climate normals, the city is comfortable for roughly half the year and demanding for the other half, so the calendar matters.

The cool, dry season from roughly late September/October through March is the classic best time to visit, and the reason Udaipur's peak tourist months fall here. Daytime temperatures in winter (December–January) are pleasant, generally in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, while nights turn genuinely cold and can dip toward or below 10°C — cold enough that you will want a jacket for early-morning boat rides, rooftop dinners and Sajjangarh at sunset. Skies are clear, the light is beautiful for photography, and sightseeing is comfortable all day. October and November are especially rewarding, which brings us to the monsoon.

The southwest monsoon reaches Udaipur around late June and runs through September, with July and August the wettest months. This is not a season to dismiss. Rajasthan's lakes are entirely dependent on the rains, and a good monsoon is what fills Pichola, Fateh Sagar and the surrounding reservoirs to the brim. A Udaipur seen with its lakes full, the Aravallis freshly green, waterfalls running at Sajjangarh and Saheliyon Ki Bari, and low clouds drifting over the palaces is arguably the city at its most magical. The trade-off is intermittent heavy showers and humidity. For this reason, the post-monsoon window of September to November is often the single best time to come: the rains have topped up the lakes, the landscape is still green, and the weather has begun to cool. If full lakes matter to you — and in the City of Lakes they should — aim for this period, because by late spring in a weak-monsoon year water levels can drop noticeably.

Summer, from April to June, is hot and best avoided if you have a choice. Daytime highs regularly climb into the low 40s Celsius, making midday sightseeing draining; if you must travel then, plan activities for early morning and evening and rest through the afternoon heat.

Festivals are another reason to time a visit. The Mewar Festival, one of Udaipur's signature celebrations, takes place in spring around March/April, coinciding with Gangaur, when decorated idols of the goddess Gauri are carried through the old city and taken out onto Lake Pichola in a ceremonial boat procession — check exact dates with Rajasthan Tourism, as they follow the Hindu calendar and shift each year. In December, the Shilpgram Utsav crafts fair animates the rural arts complex on the city's edge. Hariyali Amavasya, a monsoon "greenery" festival, is celebrated locally in the rainy season.
