Sample itineraries for Udaipur
Udaipur rewards a relaxed pace, but its core sights cluster tightly around Lake Pichola, so you can see a lot in a short time. Here are three ways to structure a visit depending on how long you have.
One day (the essentials). Start early at the City Palace to beat both the heat and the crowds — give it two to three hours to work through the courtyards, the museum and the terrace views. Step out and walk up to the Jagdish Temple nearby, then wander the old-city lanes toward Gangaur Ghat. In the late afternoon, take a Lake Pichola boat ride from the City Palace jetty, timing it for sunset and, if possible, a stop at Jag Mandir island. End the day at Bagore Ki Haveli on Gangaur Ghat for the evening Dharohar folk-dance show — book the show ticket earlier in the day during busy season. This single loop captures the palace, the lake, a temple and Mewari performing arts, all within walking distance.
Two to three days (the full city, unhurried). Day one follows the one-day plan above. On day two, head north to Fateh Sagar Lake in the morning for a boat ride to Nehru Park and a lakeside stroll, then visit Saheliyon Ki Bari — both are at their greenest just after the monsoon. In the afternoon, drive out to Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) and arrive in time for the sunset panorama over the lakes and hills. Fit in the Vintage Car Museum or the Karni Mata ropeway for another high viewpoint as time allows. Use a third day either to slow down — a leisurely morning on a rooftop, shopping for miniature paintings and textiles, exploring Shilpgram — or to take a day trip out of the city (see below): the Kumbhalgarh Fort and Ranakpur temples combination is the standout choice and comfortably fills a day.
Pairing Udaipur with the region. Udaipur combines naturally with nearby heritage towns. Chittorgarh (about 115 km) can be done as a long day trip or as a stop en route to/from Udaipur if you are travelling by road from the Jaipur/Bundi side. Mount Abu, Rajasthan's only hill station (about 165 km), pairs well as a two-night add-on for cooler air and the Dilwara Jain temples. History-minded travellers often build a southern-Rajasthan loop of Chittorgarh–Udaipur–Kumbhalgarh–Ranakpur before continuing to Jodhpur. However you sequence it, treat Udaipur as the comfortable, lake-view base you return to between forays.
Day-by-day, a strong three-day skeleton looks like this:
- Day 1: City Palace → Jagdish Temple → old-city walk → sunset Pichola boat ride + Jag Mandir → Bagore Ki Haveli show.
- Day 2: Fateh Sagar → Saheliyon Ki Bari → Vintage Car Museum → Sajjangarh at sunset.
- Day 3: Day trip to Kumbhalgarh + Ranakpur (or Nathdwara + Eklingji), returning by evening.
